About the author
My name is Jenny. I’m a writer.
One day I would like to have the courage to introduce myself that way at parties or to friendly strangers in elevators, but it’s a start if I can say it here.
If your brain is hard-wired like most people’s, the most interesting thing on this page is coming up next:
And now that we have those important matters out of the way, I’ll tell you a little more about myself.
The standard party, elevator, or blog sidebar introduction would be this: My name is Jenny, and I’m a 32-year-old software developer, originally from Ohio, but now living in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, with a French husband and a standard-issue ferret.
I am one thesis shy of a master’s degree in computer science, and my research areas include compilers, constraint satisfaction problems, and concurrent programming.
My on-again, off-again university education stretched over more than 10 years, including several years of chemical engineering, philosophy, and linguistics studies at the University of Akron in Ohio, night classes in computer science at Portland State University, and the conclusion of my bachelor’s degree and continuing on into graduate studies at the University of Victoria.
My outside-of-university research interests have included Egyptology and languages ancient and modern. I speak fluent French, some German, and know a bit of Gaelic, Dutch, Italian, Arabic, and Hebrew – and yes I can read hieroglyphics. My most recent language studies have been Old English (pre-Norman) and the proto-Canaanite language.
I’m also a poet and lover of poetry, and a good cook and lover of good cooking.
Some favorite things:
- Favorite books
- Que ma joie demeure by Jean Giono, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery
- Favorite movie
- La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc by Carl Theodor Dreyer (1928)
- Favorite poets
- Gerard Manley Hopkins, William Butler Yeats, Edna St. Vincent Millay, William Carlos Williams, Charles Baudelaire
- Favorite music
- Corsican polyphony, medieval polyphony (Josquin Desprez, etc.), The Smashing Pumpkins, Odessa Chen, Pink Floyd, French hip-hop (I don’t know why), and whatever last.fm says I’m listening to
- Favorite English words
- dim, snack
- Favorite random thing
- When I’m doing dishes and slam down the bottle of Dawn, and a whole spray of wee bubbles comes spurting out the top and floats gently down over me…
The character I resemble most in the story? Egelric, certainly, with some Alred mixed in. I’m not dashing or gallant like our little Duke, but all his inner anguish is straight out of me, along with this line:
“Poetry is not only something to be written, dear Lili, but to be lived.”

OMG the picture is so cool. It looks like a lab from X-Files or some sci-fi show. You look smart and good looking. Everything I imagined you to be.
Maybe we should have a members photo thread....
You first!
That would be a good idea. Now I'm curious about La passion de Jeanne d'Arc, I think I'll buy it on Amazon.
Oh, I never noticed this little featurette! You're even prettier than I remember from your other picture!
And are those two computers I see?
I've always wondered how you chose just the right picture. Now I know.
That's one computer, two monitors. My other computer, which is the one on which I actually Sim, is not in the shot. It is far less impressive than LAR!!!!
Interesting. Your computer skills are pretty handy for this story, huh?
It is something I may mention up there if I ever get around to writing a better bio page for myself. I rushed the current version out because Mr. Lothere was clamoring for his dinner.
Seriously, this site has been the first time in my life that my writing side, my "artistic" side, and my computer-programming "sciencey" side have all come together into one big project. It is a very cool experience for me.
I can imagine.
You seem like someone that I'd love to meet and just spend hours contemplating the universe with. Or just contemplating Devin's fascination with all the unfortunate women of Lothere.
Its my unfortunate luck to have favorite characters that meet terrible endings.
How long has this been here?
Eep! I can't watch La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc. That movie freaks me out. But I've been told that I have delicate sensibilities where on-screen violence is concerned.
Ok, so in the photo, I get that the little pink highlights in your hair are coming from the screens behind you but where is that blue light coming from? Does Lar have some secret, third megascreen?
I am hyper-sensitive to on-screen violence and I still love that movie. Maybe on-screen violence with an expressionist aesthetic is OK? Just make it arty. There is surely some Antonin-Artaud-as-a-monk in Aelfden.
Both pink and blue highlights are courtesy of my
NORAD missile defense tracUSB LED lamps. I spend so much time in this otherwise-dark room that my body had better start adapting to synthesizing vitamin D from exposure to colored LEDs.I don't know how I missed this for so long. *Smacks forehead*
Bitchin.
Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite books too. Actually, it's the only book I prefer to read in English and not in my native language. If you like Pride and Prejudice you must see BBC's miniserie. I think that the athmosphere is very "austenian" and it has the same plot as the book (unlike some other movie versions of books) Even the dialog is often from the book. *thinking about Mister Darcy and drooling*
It's also interesting you like Anne of Green Gables. Somehow Gwynn remains me of Anne. Cearball is the mysterious romantic fantacy man and Finn is definitely Gilbert.
What do you mean by chemical engineering?
Hee hee it's no secret I model Gwynn on Anne a lot. Isn't "the depths of despair!" an Anne quote too? I didn't realize it till I wrote it the other day. I also throw in the occasional Anne in-joke, such as Gog and Magog...
I've seen a P&P or too and probably have seen the BBC one. It's my Mom's favorite book too and she had at least one movie version on VHS. The one I haven't seen is the one where Mr. Darcy jumps in a pond. It inspired me to make Ethelwyn fall in a moat however.
Chemical engineering is an engineering discipline just like mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, etc., but it's true that it's not the most widely-known of them -- a lot of universities don't even offer chemical engineering degrees. It's like being a chemist, but instead of discovering new techniques in a little beaker in a lab, you're trying to figure out how to implement techniques discovered in a lab on a massive, industrial scale.
I loved the first year or so of it -- when I was still learning the "pure" chemistry and physics and math, but as soon as we started the real "engineering" side, I found it soul-crushingly boring. No offense to any engineers out there.
My main "excuse" to myself for choosing ChemE was that it was (and I think still is) the field of study that offers the highest average starting salary to brand-new graduates. (Who don't have doctorate-level degrees anyway). At that age it didn't even occur to me that one should have "what you like to do" as a factor for a career to choose. I just assumed I would hate my job, so I might as well pick one that paid well.
Fortunately I sort of stumbled into software development, and I love it, I don't pollute the earth or risk my health with it, and I get paid about as well as a chemical engineer anyway. I wish I had known that back then. But then again, back in 1993/1994 when I was choosing my course of study and almost nobody had Internet at home, no one could imagine would software development would even be like in 2009. Certainly my clueless 17-year-old self could not have.
Oh, it's really funny. I did notice Gog and Magog, but I didn't realize it was Anne quote. I just thought you and Montgomery knew something I didn't. At this point Gog and Magog had turned into a pair of huge mythical giants in my imagination... and they were just porcelaine dogs.
I mean the one with the pond. It's not a movie. It's a six part serie with six hours or so to enjoy. I have seen also the latest one with Keira Knightley, but I didn't like that one at all. In my opinion, the only thing it had in common with P&P was the title.
Now when you have mentioned it, I can see some similarities in the story of Ethelwyn and Wynflaed. But don't tell me that Ethelwyn is your image of Mr Darcy!
That's very prosaic way to choose a profession. It's all I can say. But it is very difficult to choose when you know so little (and are SO young and idealistic and everything like that). My field is more like molecular biology... so I am one of those guys who think in nano/micro scale. But I have been venturing a bit the exciting world of software. Actually, I have an exam on sql tomorrow... and I should be studying it more... and I don't think that loitering in your lovely database counts as studying.
Gog and Magog are kings (or kingdoms?) in the Bible, but it was in Anne of Green Gables that I got the Gog => God and Magog => My God classification. (Actually it was more like Anne of the Island... as I recall)
There was no pond scene in the original book, I swear! I did model Ethelwyn on Mr. Darcy a bit... more on the Mr. Darcy at the first party where he's a bit huffy and all. Of course we know that Mr. Darcy has a heart of gold, whereas Ethelwyn turned out to be a little more shallow, I think. (Though he did stick up for Paul and Cat on several occasions when Egelric would have none of it.)
How did I not find this before... am going blind. You have a ferret!? That is seriously cool stuff. I always thought it would be cool to have a ferret since some people used to call me the ferret (verity=ferrity, yeah, not so flattering). What is its name?
The picture is very cool too... it is quite awesome to see where the magic happens (and who is making it
His name is Stinker. That picture is from when he was only a year old or so... now he's an elderly gentleman of nearly 7. (Ferrets live around 8 years or so.)
And he is currently on my lap "helping" me write by licking my hands and arms whenever they go by.
SEVEN? ARE YOU SERIOUS? My boyfriend's dad generally has about 5 ferrets at a time and they never live beyond four!
Heheh, maybe his ferrets wear each other out before their time? I've seen ferrets play, and I get tired just watching.
Stinky is an only ferret so he lives a rather princely life -- waited on hand and foot, snoozing on laps, and so forth. He is my substitute cat.
You have a very interesting path to your point of writing. I’m glad that you have chosen to be that for which you would be known (at least at parties). I’m beginning a similar journey, but later and without… …a ferret.
I’m looking forward to delving.
LSO
Likewise you. We’re just continuing the ancient art of the bards – retelling old legends and actual history to make “eyes go wide.” Our audience isn’t gathered around a single fire anymore, but dozens scattered around the world. Thanks for visiting.
Your ferret is cute
Hang on Pride and Prejudice is your favourite book???
Oh shit.
So, I’m clearly late to the party but I love the bio. i wish to be almost-fluent in a language besides English one day. I may be going to France next year so I’m quite interested in learning French. If not, I’ll have to confide in my handy-dandy French-to-English dictionary.
All of this makes you sound so worldly. French hip-hop, 1920s French movies,a French husband (am I noticing a theme here?) Pride & Prejudice (which I read in my freshman year in college, which was forever and a year ago), linguistics, chemical engineering, multiple degrees. I should re-read some classical books again myself. I have a Jane Austen book that I started reading but got distracted because, well, I’m me & that happens very easily.
Thanks for the help Jenny!
Jenny, Your story is very interesting! Would love to hear from you! Write me sometime>
Just curious to see how you’re doing in life these days? I imagine busy doing fab stuffs!?!
phewwww! *wipes the worry-lines from forehead.
Just read the message you sent Eva. Glad you are okay, .… tired, but okay. Hoping you get your “mojo” back soon
I had been in chat with Sunni and Eva mentioning that I have 3 days off … maybe I should jump on the ferry and park myself outside your building with a sign “We miss you Lothere!” Now, I don’t have to especially because I’d hate to have all the passersby think I was some homeless crazy street bum or have you call the cops because of some crazy stalker.
I didn’t see the message, but I too am glad you are okay. I understand tired. I’ll still be here when you are ready to write.
And a quick “Howdy”
Just because
Bunnies are always a good way to get attention, Wawa
Just thinking of you, Jenny! I hope you are doing well
Hi Jenny, greetings from Germany! Like Tiffany, I hope you’re doing fine. Hoping to read some news from you one of these days.
Belated Happy Canada Day .… and Happy 4th of July to you and the hubby
Hoping all is well with you and the writing!!
Hey Jenny! I couldn’t find an email to contact you with! I just wanted to say that I’ve read your story since I was in highschool (almost 9 years ago!!) and that it really meant so much to me! I wanted to thank you for writing such a captivating story.
I hope you are still writing! If you ever publish anything you can count me as one of your fans!
