Maire’s brothers get Egelric alone on the beach and take brutal vengeance against him.
Hide Spoiler
Egelric, Brede, Muirgius, and a fellow named Briccene have spent the afternoon inspecting an old watchtower a half-mile up the beach from Ramsaa. As they return, Briccene spots a ship in the harbor.
Fearing that members of Maire’s family have arrived, Brede pretends he forgot Egelric’s knife back at the watchtower, providing Egelric an excuse to go back alone and wait for word from Brede before he risks returning to the fort.
However, Maire’s brothers Comgeall and Cathal have been ashore for hours, and along with Diarmait they are lying in wait for him.
Egelric is ambushed when he returns to the tower. The brothers wrestle his knife away from him, slicing open his face and his side in the process. They strip off his shirt and Comgeall whips his back with a scourge until his skin is shredded and he is half-conscious with pain.
Fearing Comgeall intends to kill Egelric, Diarmait puts a stop to the scourging, but Comgeall then apparently intends to rape Egelric in retribution for his rape of Maire. Diarmait picks up the scourge and gives Comgeall a whack to get him off of Egelric, and when Comgeall turns against Diarmait, Cathal — the eldest of the three — finally calls it all off.
The three brothers run up the beach back to Ramsaa, leaving Egelric for dead on the sand.
