Sadb is trying to keep Muirgius from seeing a panicked Diarmait, but Muirgius is determined to get his way. He has been increasingly insolent with her lately, but for the first time he gets physical with her, and his aggression takes on a sexual tone.

Four of Eirik’s ships have stopped just off the coast of Ramsaa. In the past twelve days, Diarmait has found twelve brass dogs, and today he is frantic to find the thirteenth, thinking that if he finds it, Eirik himself will not be the thirteenth dog. In his desperation, he has just torn apart the pillows and mattresses in his bedroom, thinking the dog might be inside.
Muirgius shows up looking for him soon afterwards, and Sadb struggles to keep Muirgius from seeing the mess of feathers in the room.
Muirgius and Sadb scuffle when Sadb tries to get him to address her as a lady, and Muirguis roughly grabs her arm. Sadb lays her hand on his sword hilt and makes an absurdly violent threat. Muirgius laughs, and she is relieved, but Muirgius then clamps his hand over hers and holds it over the sword hilt, taunting her to try it, since he would enjoy defending himself from her, and she probably would too.
Sadb gets him to release her by telling him where Diarmait is, and Muirgius seems to revert to his usual grouchy self, eternally annoyed at her presence.
He tells her he is trying to get Diarmait to calm the anxious people, but Diarmait is watching the ships from the roof of the keep. Muirgius informs Sadb that seven more ships have been spotted sailing from the north.
Sadb proposes that she go herself to calm the people. Muirgius bows and agrees to this, but before he leaves he plucks a stray feather from her dress, taking the opportunity to caress her breast with his thumb.
