College Admissions Essays

I'm suffering writer's block. I don't have an actual essay per se, so much as a "personal statement". I don't know why, but it seems that broad topics just don't do it for me. I have a general idea of what I want to say and express about myself, but putting my thoughts into coherent and logical sentences is gonna take a wee bit more time than I have available.

Don't even get me started on applying for scholarships.

My Lit teacher absolutely GUSHED over my essay. She loved it to bits. She thought the placement of the anecdote was very creative and will help me to stand out from the other applicants. She suggested that I add a conclusive line to the first paragraph...
"I knew from the expectant looks on their faces that I had my work cut out for me."

I let my math teacher read it and she said that she got goosebumps at the end. That's the effect I was going for!

Turns out I actually don't have to turn the packet in until the 26th. I was deceived! Now I can go over my application again and tweak some things.

UPDATE*** I got my financial aid award from second choice college that sparked this whole thread. It is a private college so the numbers are pretty big. Ready for it? $39,847.00 out of $43,110.00

If your first choice is still your first choice, you should try to go there. Hopefully money will be available there too. It's good to know you have an excellent fall-back plan though.

When do you have to decide? There's no need to rush is there? Hopefully you can wait until you have more data about what your options really are.

And will you be able to fill in the gap between the financial aid and the cost of the 2nd school anyway? It's still a substantial difference.

I want to decide by April 15th because commitment deposits are due on May 1st. I don't know when I'll hear anything from my first choice. Actually the difference is about half as much to attend my first choice so that is a consideration. I can afford my second choice as of now and I am still applying for various scholarships.

So last night was awards night.

My senior class is officially tired of hearing my name.

I received five scholarships total and other miscellaneous awards which brought my grand total to about $11,500 so far.

After lots of pleading and begging, I got my mom to sign the papers for my first choice, University of Georgia. She wasn't sure where the money was coming from, but I told her I was bound to get at least one or two scholarships. She was BEYOND happy last night! All the stress over the past few months/years actually felt WORTH it when I went across that stage and nearly broke my neck.

Except for the rude students and their parents.

But I will simply ignore their ignorance and self-loathing. What matters is, I'm going to graduate next Saturday with honors, number 7 out of 375, an AP Scholar, and a Beta Scholar! They won't bring me down!

I think this affirmation deserves bunnies now.

Let's just say, I shoulda broke in those heels. However, I didn't think I was gonna go up there so many times. I got to a point where I just wanted them to hand them to me in my seat. The dogs were HOWLING! But I made it comic relief, people clapped when I finally took the long( i.e. safe) way off the stage .

Beta Scholar, you maintained member status in Beta Club and met all the qualifications/participated/crammed in points for 4 full years. Very few honor graduates actually got that. I want to say maybe 10 people total?

But what is Beta Club? I'm from Hodunk, Ohio, graduating class of about 70 people. The only club we had was pep club. :-/

Wow, academia is a lot more complicated in the States! I've never heard of Beta Club before, and they didn't even bother ranking my class of about 400 by averages. They graduated us alphabetically by last name, which inevitably made me the last one across the stage, even though knowing the horrible academics at my high school, I was probably in the 90th percentile average-wise (damn you, WWI mix-up that resulted in family immigrating to North America with a Z name!). Oh well, the one advantage there was that I got away with doing a dance on the stage.
