Question and Answer Session

Nayna asked in a Verso comment whether I would be interested in doing a Q&A on the Forum to cover some threads I may have missed last time I tried to tidy up all of the many loose ends of the story. I'm game to try, though I can't promise I will remember everything I meant to write.
I've dusted off this creaky old forum, opened it up for new account creation and also anonymous comments (as far as I know, let me know here or on the Verso post if not), so let's see what's left in my brain.

She had some kind of stomach
Submitted by Lothere on Thu, 10/26/2017 - 10:55.She had some kind of stomach or esophageal problem that would eventually lead her to bleed to death from an ulcer. I wrote in the spoilers:
She did not have what her mother died from, namely breast cancer.
Oh I'm so excited! Thank you

I don't know if it was ever made 100% clear, if I missed something or what, but was it really Eirik who killed Diarmait? If so, what exactly were his motivations?
Did Uallach have epilepsy?
What would have happened with the K-baby? Would Brede have ever noticed?
Would the elves have died out over the next generation or two? Would Vash have changed the customs so they wouldn't? Also, I know you mentioned the blood-sickness...What exactly was it...vampirism, lycanthropy or something else? And what did Ris do to Hila? Did he and Madra make up and have their baby Sunshine?
Would Eadie and Sigfrieth have had another child? Gunnie and Egelric? Caedwulf and Ogive?
Speaking of Caedwulf--would he have left behind an heir, or would Drage have inherited the throne?
I know this is a ton of questions and I appreciate you taking the time for this!

I wanted to know what happened to Cat and Paul's dew-by! I don't think that got answered in the spoilers post.
I may be a little too
Submitted by acekay on Sun, 10/29/2017 - 12:47.I may be a little too excited to remember everything I've had questions about in my many rereads...
Would Lasrua and Malcolm have kids as well?
Was there some weird affliction on the Khorron noble women? Most of the ladies in Osh and Soren's generation were dead, I think Osh's sister may have been the sole surviving woman... Was this also why Iylaine died of a sudden "shock" during her third pregnancy?
Would Edris/Colin (Aengus's father) ever have happened?
Hetty would have died around the same age Lili and Bruni would be when Matilda died for Gwynn/Meggie, would they have tried to support Hetty's girl through that even though they would probably be going through... On that note, would Alred have let them marry whoever they wanted? Would Alred have tried to secure Bruni's inheritance from her biological father after Hetty's death? I assume if Sigefrith was alive at that point, he might have pushed Alred to do so for the diplomatic possibllities...
Random thought, would Anson/Anna ever have a fling? Those two hate each other, but they always has an intense chemistry that could've definitely led to some hatesex...
Probably will be back with some more. I have to say Lothere, I love this story so much, it's been a huge part of my adolescence, and it's always comforting to go back to read storylines... I must have been 13/14 when I started reading but now I'm 25, working in publishing, and working on a few novels myself. I even have a stray medieval fantasyish idea...
ETA: what about Stein's brother in law Tryggve? What happened to him?

Submitted by Nayna (not verified) on Sun, 10/29/2017 - 14:50.Oh! I had another question--why were the higher caste elves killing the kisor?
First of all, thank you all
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 10/30/2017 - 13:39.First of all, thank you all for your continuing interest in this story, it amazes me that anyone still comes back to this site at all! I miss it, and I miss interacting with you.
To answer those who asked about me, before I get on to story questions: I am doing well, though somewhere along the way I acquired a house, a dog, and two cats, all of which keep me busier than I used to be.
I still write, though I still haven't learned how to finish a story, which, since I am no longer publishing each chapter as I go, means I have little to share with you. (Though I will certainly post here if I ever finish something!)
Furthermore, I am still torn between my desire to keep these characters alive, and the gnawing sense that I need to move on to other things. So I seesaw between projects as this tension pulls me one way or another. I'm attaching a draft of a chapter that I cut from one of these projects, since you might enjoy seeing the ghosts of some familiar characters again. You can try to guess who's who, and see how close to the old story I (some days) continue to hew.
The storylines I left dangling wide open (think Rua/Malcolm/Aengus for one) are the hardest to let go. I need closure too!
Now, I'll get started answering some story questions...
I don't know if it was ever
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 10/30/2017 - 14:04.Yes, Eirik was behind Diarmait's death, though he was not at Ramsaa when it happened and didn't do it personally. As far as Eirik was concerned, Diarmait betrayed him when he roused the Gaels of Ramsaa to massacre the Norsemen. Njal describes what happened in Njal tells the other half of the tale. So Diarmait was already dead to Eirik at that point. It was only a matter of finding the most Eirik-like way of getting his revenge.
Did Uallach have
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 10/30/2017 - 14:17.Yes, she did.
I don't think Brede would have noticed anything wrong with the baby, since reddish hair runs in the family. But there was always the chance he would find out about their affair.
However, I think it would have been far more interesting if Eirik had found out about their affair. He adored his sister -- would he have disowned her? Or, more likely, would he have found a way to use the situation to further his own ends?
Would the elves have died
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 10/30/2017 - 14:30.The demographic trends were not looking good for the elves, but I think there was scope in Vash's mind and heart to change the customs. He just needed to see how barbaric they were. "Father Lawrence" could have been the one to teach him.
It was a craving for blood, which I suppose makes it a sort of vampirism. But not the garlic-fearing sort. It didn't keep them alive or give them special powers. I can see it as being something an elf would crave only after he had tasted it once, which meant their little secret cult of blood-drinkers would have helped maintain it by recruiting new members. Otherwise an elf might have had this latent illness that he would never discover unless he accidentally tasted another elf's blood.
Cat and Paul, huh? And also
Submitted by Ann on Mon, 10/30/2017 - 15:06.Cat and Paul, huh? And also Alred if I'm not much mistaken!
Congrats on the enlargement of both living space and family! I hope the resulting business is at least a pleasant one!
And as for closure.... Weeeeeeeell, I think we'd all like that too, wouldn't we?
Seriously though, if it does not leave you alone after all this time, then maybe you do need to write it out of your head as it were. There's NaNoWriMo, which starts tomorrow... which I have on my brain, because I'm tackling it this year. Finally.

Submitted by Cassie on Mon, 11/06/2017 - 14:02.Oh! This is one that has haunted me: we never did find out exactly *why* the elves had to switch Finn and Iylaine, did we?
And what did Ris do to
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 11/06/2017 - 14:59.Hila was allowed to escape, it was Kia who was caught. And yes, it was the vampiric thing. Both he and the elf with him have the disease. The other guy had a twinge of conscience left, about going after children. Kia did survive though. She lived to be 21.
No. I see I didn't write about the fate of Ris. Remember Vash's buddy Tashnú and his low-caste girlfiend "the Nína-elf"? Unbenknownst to his buddies, Tashnú is or will be bound to Nína in secret, which is how he will sense her anguish when Ris selects her as his victim. He will track her down, find her with Ris (I think I meant for her to be dead?), and that's how he'll learn about the secret society. He'll fatally wound Ris in his rage, but Ris will taunt him as he lies dying, and goad Tashnú into tasting the blood (Ris's blood, that is) on his blade, because Ris knows that Tashnú has the sickness too. So then Tashnú will hunger for blood, but he'll be the good vampire who tries to break the curse, etc. But anyway, Ris dies before he ever gets to have his baby Sunshine. Baby Sunshine wouldn't have cured him, but maybe she would have given something to live for.
Would Eadie and Sigfrieth
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 11/06/2017 - 15:18.For the most part I determined pregnancies randomly, so I can't say. Eadie was not especially fertile, but she was able to have children, so it wasn't impossible. She just didn't have much time left.
Gunnilda was getting older. She would be at or nearing 40 by the time she and Egelric finally got together, so perhaps, or perhaps not.
Not sure about Caedwulf and Ogive. Between Caedwulf's increasing weirdness, and his Other Woman, she doesn't seem the type to share her bed unless she desired. Given that the madness appeared to be hereditary, she might have decided to settle for being the effective ruler and not having children of her own. (And/or waiting for him to die so she could marry another.) Their relationship never did seem to be based on physical attraction. But there was a sort of affection. I expect Ogive will be most grieved by the death of Sigefrith.
Speaking of Caedwulf--would
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 11/06/2017 - 15:24.Ah, that's right, Lothere's next best hope after Caedwulf was Drage.
So their fate is up to Ogive! But having Drage as King would have suited Myrddin fine, and perhaps fulfilled a prophecy or two.
I wanted to know what
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 11/06/2017 - 15:31.I don't think I had particular plans for the Dew-by, but Cat certainly deserved a break. However, considering a sort of deity decided that baby needed to exist, perhaps it was part of her plan, and the child had a role to play. I hadn't figured it out. Dew-by, Liadan, and even Seven needed to grow up a bit before they could do anything exciting.
Aww, the dew-by. I always
Submitted by acekay on Mon, 11/06/2017 - 16:20.Aww, the dew-by. I always thought Cat/Paul would've had a quiet life (well, for them) together until their deaths, which there was a lot of cryptic foreshadowing if one could live without the other...

Submitted by Cassie on Thu, 08/08/2019 - 21:27.It had something to do with them being descended from the Sidhe, I think. And the ones we saw with those traits being a little special due to not being fully human and having some of that magic (Cat and Flann, Murchad, Young Malcolm, etc.) The animal "not bound by nature" associated with the Sidhe was cats, so maybe those more cat-like features have something to do with it...
(Sorry to spam you Francois, lol. I lurk here all the time and get excited when I see others...)
