Submitted by Lothere on Wed, 03/26/2008 - 12:38.OK, I proposed some nice Anglo-Saxon / Celtic names that might have shown up along the Scottish border in this period. Since I already approve them all, just for fun I promise I will go with whichever one wins. But I get my vote like everyone else!

Submitted by Cassie on Wed, 03/26/2008 - 13:00.I went with Aedan, though I really like most of them. I do so love the Celtic names. **Sigh**
Ach, I didn't help to choose
Submitted by François on Wed, 03/26/2008 - 14:01.Ach, I didn't help to choose since there is equality between for of them. Anyway, it is so difficult to choose. I think Gudram is quite cool, but I think we could get bored of the "ae" or "an" names so that why I voted for Fergus ! (Don't worry, I always wandering in the family tree so there is no spoil to me about who'll be dead or who'll marry who since I saw it since the beginning of the story. It is just more funny because I try to guess how you'll make that things happen.)
So back to the subjects, Fergus is awesome because it's different ! Vote for Fergus !

Submitted by Lothere on Wed, 03/26/2008 - 14:04.Ha ha I didn't think of the fun in trying to guess how so-and-so ends up married to so-and-so. It would have killed me to learn ahead of time that Matilda was going to die, though, or Alwy. But surprise weddings aren't so bad I guess.

Submitted by Karen on Wed, 03/26/2008 - 14:19.Aedan is probably my favorite of the names, but I voted for my second favorite in case Araphel offs this body, too. Maybe Aedan can be for a character in the future who has a better chance of sticking around
I like the name Aedan.

Submitted by Seiza on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 05:47.I voted Randal because it reminded me of "randy".
Oh my God, I didn't even
Submitted by Lothere on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 06:21.Oh my God, I didn't even think of the "Randy Randal" angle. This is Araphel, after all. Fortunately Aedan seems to be winning! Aedan might have been my choice, except I seem to recall that it or some variants of it (Aidan?) are super popular boy's names right now. Especially in Ireland. So I didn't want to do the trendy thing.
But there is a little something special about Aedan that I like as a name for him, which may come up in a later chapter, so it would OK with me either way.
Randal... maybe not so much now!
And now that I have stared at Gudram (which I found on the Internet, duh), I wonder whether the person who transcribed it didn't make a mistake? Guðram (Guthram) seems a more likely Anglo-Saxon name. But either would be cool. Especially since Gud is like God or Good. Not, uh, Rand like Randy.
I'm with you Lothere, I
Submitted by Sonia on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 09:38.I'm with you Lothere, I chose Gudram, as it has a certain 'strength' to it. And we all know the strength of heart Egelric has within himself.
He's had to bear his fair share of burdens throughout his 'colourful' life.
And without his friends supporting, goading and bullying him, I'm sure he'd have left the valley, never to have returned.
Let's hope Araphael lives up to his new namesake (even if it is Randy Randall )
I was thinking of teasing
Submitted by Seiza on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 10:57.I was thinking of teasing opportunities more than meaningful names, clearly. XD
My second choice is Sæward, just because it looks so unique. I've seen a number of "Aidan" names before in stories or PBEMs, but I've never seen a Sæward. Heck, I can't even type it properly and have to copy-paste it since I dunno how to get that "æ" thing. XD
All the names are really cool, though. Definitely not stuff you'd find (easily) in an online baby names book.
See? Aedan = Trendy.
Submitted by Lothere on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 11:25.See? Aedan = Trendy. (What's a PBEM though?) But that's OK if people like it. It is close enough to Aed that I can justify it.
I like Sæward because it seems so romantic to me... Sæ means "sea", and "ward" (or "weard") means either ward as in warden or guardian -- someone who is assigned to stand guard over the sea, or -ward as in "westward". Seaward! How romantic is that?
Please disregard the fact that Lothere is far from the sea.
The name survives as the surname "Seward", but I've never seen anyone who has it as a first name. I'm sure someone does, though, if only because in certain circles kids sometimes get named for their mother's or some other relative's surname.
OK good to know: don't edit
Submitted by Lothere on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 11:33.OK good to know: don't edit existing polls or everyone's votes will be erased. (Democracy be damned!)
Sorry everyone. Err... you can vote again.
Please?
I took advantage of this opportunity to change my vote! Just for the heck of it. I really can't decide.
Edit: I did save a list of what everyone voted, in case some people don't get back in time. But I think there will be plenty of time before so-and-so shows up again, at my rate of writing. Dante and Araphel have to ride all the way to Loch Leven.
No matter what happens, I
Submitted by Sonia on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 14:05.No matter what happens, I still vote for Gudram. It's a nice solid name and very fitting for a very solidly built man that came from the loins of Egelric.
I'm just wondering how Araphael is going to manage this body, as it is large and cumbersome

I changed by vote to Sæward
Submitted by Alice on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 15:13.I changed by vote to Sæward this time around. Aedan does seem too trendy on second thought, and Sæward is a lot more romantic. I'm not sure how well that fits his character though. Still...cool name!
i changed my vote from Aedan
Submitted by Cassie on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 16:25.i changed my vote from Aedan to Saeward, too. You done convinced me. It's a pity Aidan is such a trendy name these days, because I adore it and have for years. Hopefully by the time I get around to having babies myself, it won't be so trendy anymore!
Don't worry if your favorite
Submitted by Lothere on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 17:09.Don't worry if your favorite name isn't picked, I am sure I will use all of these names sooner or later. If nothing else Old Aed keeps having kids so eventually he is going to have to branch out from using his family's names. He already has a kid named Sigefrith.
I'm not sure Araphel-son-of-Egelric is the Sæward type, myself. I admit he does seem a little more Fergussy or Gudramy. A nice solid name as Sonia points out.
Also I can imagine Flann (or some arbitrary Scottish lady *cough*) calling him Ferrrrrgus with a nice trill on the R, which was the main reason I changed my vote to that this time around. (Last time I picked Martan. Somehow doesn't trill as nicely.)
Umm... actually now that I've convinced everyone to vote Sæward, I'm starting to think New-New Araphel is maybe too down-to-earth (or salt-of-the-earth) to be a Sæward. See what I mean? Sæward would be great for a mysterious man with sea-green eyes, wouldn't it?
PBEM = Play-By-Email. You've
Submitted by Seiza on Thu, 03/27/2008 - 23:22.PBEM = Play-By-Email. You've heard of MUDs and MUCKs before-- online text roleplays? PBEMs is another format where players roleplay a scene through emails, then post the complete scene on a collective message board for everyone to read (or Yahoo group, as my old PBEM was held there). Basically it's online roleplaying and people create their own characters to participate. Aidan and many of its derivatives was a very popular name for medieval male characters, and for good reason too: it's a very pretty name.
Now that I know what it means, "Sæward" IS sooo romantic! [/Gwynn] But I agree that it might not fit New-New Araphel, whom I recall has been linked to the sturdy strength of oxen. I picked Gudram too, in the end (although just based on how the name looks, I prefer the Guthram spelling).
And "Sæward" certainly fits another man with mysterious eyes~ *does Sim-fan-self action*
(You know, those Scottish lasses could also say "Rrrrrrandy..." )

Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 03/28/2008 - 04:33.Ferrrrrgus forever!
Seiza, I did a PBEM once but I didn't know what it was called. This was back in 1996 or so, so maybe it wasn't even called that. I believe it was the second and last time in my life when I was not the GM in an RPG, which goes to show you how much I am into this world-building thing. (R.I.P. Gary!)
I had a male name that I used over and over and over in games, and now I can't think of what it is. I am so steeped in Anglo-Saxon / Old Gaelic by now. What was it?? I have an eerie feeling that it was in fact Aidan.
My favorite female name was always Iylaine / Iylaina. I invented a whole elven language to justify it in this story.
I picked the G name to add
Submitted by Jadzia7667 on Sat, 03/29/2008 - 07:35.I picked the G name to add some variety into the sounds. When I'm reading, I'm imagining the characters speaking and trying to figure out how middle English and Saxon and the other accents would sound.

Well, I chose Fergus because
Submitted by Twistedchic911 on Fri, 05/23/2008 - 17:42.Well, I chose Fergus because not only is it cool-sounding, you could really drag it out, like "Ferrrrrrrrrrgus!" And it's the best name I could place a Scottish accent on, and also because it sounds like my last name!. (Fergusin) Hurray for Scotland and all progeny of people from Scottland! But, I also had the one with the overlapping "AE" it looked cool, but never could I pronounce it, sorry.
Ferrrrrrrgus! You see what
Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 05/23/2008 - 17:45.Ferrrrrrrgus! You see what I'm saying! Fergus (my vote) and Gudram are neck-and-neck, whoo! Only three more chapters to go and then I will have to decide for sure.

Though, I don't know why I'm complaining- I'm not a big fan of Araphel. À mon avis, he deserves to be stuck with a silly name
What you need to do is
Submitted by Lothere on Tue, 05/27/2008 - 16:21.What you need to do is pretend you are a Scotswoman of the likes of Cat or Flann, go out onto a windy hilltop, plant your hands on your hips, throw back your head, and yell "Fairrrrrrrrrrrr-gus!" And not like "Fergus, thank God you've come back to me!" but "Fergus, if you don't get your worthless hide back here before I count to three....!" Then, I swear, you will see the excellence of the name. (Not that I have tried it. But I think it's a safe bet.)
