How to save my Sims from I-dunno-what ?
Submitted by François on Fri, 04/04/2008 - 16:12.
This is another request from a computer crap guy to a computer scientist girl...
I begin to love my little story and my little world and I would be so sad if I lost it because of a bug or something. So could you please teach me how to save my stuff (houses and sims) to have them back if my computer or my game ever crash ?
Thank you very much again, Lothere !

I back my game up in several
Submitted by Lisa on Sat, 04/05/2008 - 03:59.I back my game up in several ways.
One is to burn the entire TS2 folder onto a DVD. Hmmm. Let me see if I can give you more details from memory . . . I go to my DVD burning program and select the "EA Games" folder from My Documents. If the folder is too big, (over 4.7 G, I think), then I burn as much as I can onto one, then the rest onto another. Say, like maybe the downloads folder separately since mine is probably at least 4.7G by itself.
Another method is to change the name of the EA Games folder to "EA Games_backup" or something similar. Then when you next go into your game, it will re-create the EA Games folder and you can then copy your downloads folder and your neighborhood folders over to the new file.
The last method I use is I copy my EA Games Folder over to an external hard drive.
I know you asked Lothere, but I was here, so I answered.
Now that I've thought about it a few minutes, you should probably be backing up the EA Games folder that's located in "Program Files".
No problem, Lisa, thanks a

Sorry I took my time
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 04/07/2008 - 11:21.Sorry I took my time responding, François, but Lisa already said what I would have said. And in less words.
If you already have and use SimPE there is also a neighborhood backup tool included. I use that on a regular basis. That will only save your lots and Sims, however -- it won't save your CC, so if your computer crashes you will have a lot of downloading to do.
I back up my Sims quite regularly (the entire N004 neighborhood directory in the case of Lothere) -- usually several times a week, mainly whenever I have done a lot of building or whenever I have created new characters or Sims have had babies. I back up my CC (in the Downloads folder) less often -- once a month or so -- because I figure even if I lose the last 30 days of downloads, that will just be a few hairstyles I will have to change.
I don't keep old backups forever... I only save the most recent ones. However I have saved one backup per year since 1069. If for some reason I ever wanted to do a flashback scene in a castle that has changed a lot, I still could.
I don't save a backup of the Program Files/EA Games stuff. 99% of that will be recreated when you do a reinstall -- which you will have to do anyway if your hard drive totally crashes. The only things in there that I keep separate backups of are the camera files and the lighting files. If you don't modify those and/or you know where you downloaded your modified ones, like if you are using Gunmod's camera or lighting, then you don't even need to save those.
Err, I think custom stairs are located in Program Files, too, but if you don't use custom stairs then you're good. But now that makes me think I am going to have to back up mine...
Well thanks a lot ! I though

I'm 21 and I suck at using technology ! Yeah ! Thank you very much ! You made me confident in informatic plus I can save my sims for destruction for the rest of my/their life/lives.
One thing that I forgot to
Submitted by Lisa on Tue, 04/08/2008 - 05:36.One thing that I forgot to mention: I use re-writeable discs for my backup. That way I can override the previous one and I don't use a lot of discs.
