I voted for "hating" her
Submitted by Karen on Fri, 05/30/2008 - 02:16.I voted for "hating" her because of the husband-flirting, mostly. I don't hate her, but I dislike her for those reasons more than the Lydia Bennet-ness. I felt that she was condescending to Brit (a princess!) and to Wynna and Anson who didn't deserve it. So, I'm not a fan, even for Bertie's sake, and I wouldn't mind if she died. I'd probably enjoy it (though not as much as I enjoyed Hilda dying).
She isn't likable, but I
Submitted by Lydia on Fri, 05/30/2008 - 05:11.She isn't likable, but I don't think we've ever had a chapter from her point of view. I don't hold the dating every boy in town thing against her - it seemed like a smart way to get a husband. When she was trying to get revenge on Anson by getting Wynna in trouble with her mom, that was pretty low, but she was a teenager who'd been publicly humiliated by him. After her marriage she's pretty insufferable, with her "it's not the thing" thing, but it'd be a shame if she was killed off before we ever knew her motivations for being the way she is. She's probably insecure about her new place in society and is trying very hard to seem "proper".
She comes off pretty poorly.
Submitted by PenelopetheFox on Fri, 05/30/2008 - 06:45.She comes off pretty poorly. Never been crazy about her but I can't say that I hate her. I mean, there are characters in the story who have done much worse and yet somehow still manage to gain our sympathy. So I agree that if we are to have any chance of liking her, we would have to see things from her perspective or at least see her in the middle of doing something noble. Well, I say "we" as in "we the readers" but Devin likes her and there are probably others. So "we the readers who find Anna not-so-palatable".
I'm definitely not a fan,
Submitted by Lisa on Fri, 05/30/2008 - 10:39.I'm definitely not a fan, but I suppose, like any other character she could possibly be redeemed.
I love her, there is some
Submitted by Devin on Fri, 05/30/2008 - 12:40.I love her, there is some good in Anna.
She is petty, and shallow,
Submitted by Tiana on Fri, 05/30/2008 - 14:13.She is petty, and shallow, and all that. Which means she probably has some serious daddy issues or something. I voted that I disliked her but would like to see her well for Bertie's sake. We haven't seen them in ages though, I don't know if she is even treating him well. If not, then she can die for all I care.
LOL Devin you always like the girls that come off mean and everyone hates...maybe you see something in them that we don't? Except for Aia, cause she is wonderful and marvelous, so was Sela.
Now, I knew that girl was
Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 05/30/2008 - 16:28.Now, I knew that girl was not the most popular of my characters, but it's interesting to see how thoroughly unliked she is. I wasn't planning on doing anything with her for a while... she's definitely coming back into the story, but hopefully at a slower moment.
We have seen her POV once, in "Anna pays a visit". That's where we saw how shallow and Lydia Bennet-like she could be. She does seem rather insecure, so it's a shame she makes up for it by being so absurd.
I voted "Dislike her, but wish her well for Bertie's sake" in story terms. As her creator, though, I like her a lot because she's rather unique among the others, and I do have some plans for her that I'm looking forward to writing.
In her defense, I will say that Gunnilda likes her a lot. In "Gunnilda gives her blessing":
Gunnilda hasn't seen much of her since their marriage though. Perhaps she only hears the good news from Bertie...
I was thinking about sending Gunnilda out to his house for Xmas, and then we could see them all together, which would be interesting. But ugh, so many other stories to write about. Let me know if you're interested though, and I'll do it.
I agree with Tiana...if
Submitted by Cassie on Fri, 05/30/2008 - 17:07.I agree with Tiana...if she's making Bertie happy, then that's just fine. If not...kill her off for all I care. I don't think I've disliked a single character in the story so much, except for Myrrdin, I guess. I don't really remember ever seeing any good points of hers like we have with many characters. It's true that many others have done far more awful things, but we've seen other aspects of them too. If Anna has redeeming traits and I see them, then I might change my opinion. Till then, hate.
The fact that Gunnilda likes her is a point in her favor, but Gunnilda is still rather naive and easily swayed. We'll see.
I always had the impression
Submitted by PenelopetheFox on Fri, 05/30/2008 - 17:34.I always had the impression that Gunnilda didn't really know Anna very well. I seem to remember Anna being pretty manipulative of Gunnilda. It just looked like Gunnie was taken in by Anna's charms and her clean little house.
The tidy house is real.
Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 05/30/2008 - 17:39.The tidy house is real. Anna is quite a good housekeeper, though now that she's a lady it obviously just isn't The Thing for her to turn her hand to it. Still, I am sure her household is well-run.
However, I think you're right about the manipulation. Gunnilda seemed to think she was a little odd, but really thought she was trying to help Wynna in that chapter "Gunnilda is informed". That's the only time we've seen Anna and Gunnilda together, as I recall.
Wow, a whole Anna post!
Submitted by Twistedchic911 on Fri, 05/30/2008 - 18:17.Wow, a whole Anna post! Urrggg I really don't like her, she led on Dunstan, stomped on Os's heart, told on Wynna, AND messed around with Bertie! Anna's like the village bicycle, everyone takes her for a ride. It's like she flirted and blew a kiss at her suitor, and as soon as they caught up to her, she ran farther up the path to marriage! Yes, I see that it probably the best way to find a husband back then, but does she have to act above her station? I mean, she was looking down on Britamund, how high on her horse can you get?! I hope she falls off of that horse and breaks a nail for once... And if she treats Bertie bad, may God help her.

I'm always the odd vote out
Submitted by Devin on Sat, 05/31/2008 - 06:19.I'm always the odd vote out in some of these polls. When everyone hated and despised Elfleda and Maud for their vindictive ways I remembered when there was a time when Elfleda and Maud weren't that unhappy and vindictive but life made them that way.
The reason why I love Lady Sela is not only for her beauty but for her strength and bravery which was something IMO that Egelric's other wives didn't have. Sela knew that her love for Egelric was forbidden and could cost her, her life but she still pursued him. This is what makes me so angry with Egelric right now; Sela lost her life for her love for him. And he's throwing his life away. Aia is just as strong and brave like her sister and that's why I like her so much.
Anna I beleive is insecure about her new postion and style as "Lady Anna" there are some people in the valley (Ogive) that don't like the fact that a tiler's daughter is now the wife of a knight. So she also has to deal with that.
Has Ogive ever really done
Submitted by Lothere on Sat, 05/31/2008 - 06:56.Has Ogive ever really done or said anything against Anna? I don't recall that. The only one who I know has is Brit herself.
Oh no, I ment to write Brit
Submitted by Devin on Sat, 05/31/2008 - 08:39.Oh no, I ment to write Brit but I was thinking about Ogive. But I remember that I asked you once why some people didn't like Anna and you mentioned that Ogive found Anna's sudden elevation from tiler's daughter to knight's wife a bit odd?
I may have... it seems kind
Submitted by Lothere on Sat, 05/31/2008 - 12:14.I may have... it seems kind of obvious that it would seem so to Ogive, who comes from an established European court. But I would expect Ogive would make allowances for that fact.
I don't know, I don't think Ogive is quite a snob. She wouldn't turn her nose up at Anna for being a tiler's daughter (or Bertie for being a pig farmer's son), even if she might consider such an arrangement unbefitting a royal court. But that's only if Anna and Bertie were perfectly respectable people otherwise. Bertie probably passes muster, but I am sure Ogive sees right through Anna's airs. And Ogive thinks herself such a good judge of character, that she can't possibly like Anna. Also she is quite loyal to Brit in an almost puppy-doggish way, and if Brit led the way in teasing Anna, Ogive would be sure to follow.
However, it is true that Ogive is pretty insecure about some things. I don't think Anna's existence bothers her in the slightest, since it doesn't affect her personally, but I wonder how she would feel if she learned that Caedwulf preferred the attentions of a lowly blacksmith's daughter to her own.
I wouldn't want to see Ogive
Submitted by Devin on Sat, 05/31/2008 - 12:36.I wouldn't want to see Ogive angry especially after she finds out about Cecily and the baby. But the DRAMA is inevitable.
I voted dislike that petty,
Submitted by Verity on Mon, 06/02/2008 - 13:33.I voted dislike that petty, shallow, Lydia-Bennett like character but what I meant is I dislike her as a person. But I think she is extremely entertaining as a character. You can't have only likeable characters, then it gets to boring. Lydia Bennett was always the most entertaining in PandP and while I don't think in Anna is on par yet she may have it in her.
