Now I can't stalk the site anymore!
Back to school= back to lame books, annoying/aggravating/immature people, homework, extracurriculars, teenage DRAMA, etc.
I don't wanna! WAH!!!!!!

Submitted by Cassie on Mon, 08/04/2008 - 09:19.Or COLLEGE. College is awesome. More work, but way less superficial crap and being constrained in small spaces and arbitrary teachers and being shut up in one building all damn day without being allowed to leave for a mere moment. **Flashbacks**
I do feel your pain - I hated school from the first day of kindergarten to the last day of senior year. Good luck!

I agree with Cassie, college is pretty cool. College is what high school ought to be. If you have a chunk of time for reading, Paul Graham wrote an interesting essay that touches on this, and while I don't agree with everything he says in it, there's this part that sums up high school nicely:
The essay is called "Why Nerds are Unpopular", so if you ever wondered that yourself, it's worth a read.
I personally do not miss high school AT ALL. Nothing about that experience that I liked, if there was anything, was not also present in university, with lots of other perks. In college -- especially if you live off-campus, I suppose -- it is possible to live an almost drama-free existence. The risk of drama increases exponentially as you increase your number of friends, but in high school, even if you don't have any friends, you are still standing in the center of a deluge of drama. At least in college you can avoid it.
Also, in college, if you want to learn stuff you can. In high school, I am not sure that's possible.
Ummm.... good luck with that, anyway.
...yeah. Sorry to drag you
Submitted by Cassie on Mon, 08/04/2008 - 10:05....yeah. Sorry to drag you down even more, Tiffany.
College also has waaaay longer breaks - in high school, I didn't get out till almost the end of June, and started the first week of September. In college I start the same time, but get out in mid- or early May. It's awesome. I also got about five weeks off for winter break. And the wanting to learn stuff! I was absolutely nuts about all my classes last semester. They were hard and fascinating and the professors were awesome...it was amazing. I've realized my true nerdiness and it's great.
I don't go back till the 2nd, which is nice. I love college a lot of the time, but I'm extremely close to my mom and I miss her terribly when I'm away from her.

Submitted by Tiffany on Mon, 08/04/2008 - 12:30.Back from my first day of 11th grade!
It felt monotonous. Same homeroom teacher as last year. They are deliberately keeping us together and sheltering us from the much wanted homeroom change. The freshmeat *cough* freshmen looked like they should have been sent back to middle school and injected with growth hormone. Yeah, it's that bad.
I looked pretty awesome (as always!) and I met some reallllllly cute guys. However, my AP classes are going to kill me. We already learned new material!
Tomorrow I think I have a test. ARGH!
Thanks for the moral support!
Cute guys, huh? That always
Submitted by Cassie on Mon, 08/04/2008 - 13:39.Cute guys, huh? That always helps, haha...even if school sucks, at least there's something nice to look at! My school was tiny (it had one building for all K-12) so meeting new people there was difficult, to say the least!

Which AP classes are you taking? I took AP American History (the only one my little school offered, and only that year...) and it was actually one of the highlights of my teenage existence. It proved to me that it was possible to learn and be taught and be challenged in a school environment. It was a little taste of college I guess.
Devin, the thing about life after college is that there is ALSO work, except that for most people it is mind-numbing instead of mind-expanding, and you do get paid for it. You also get a hell of a lot less free time. On the other hand, I do admit that coming home from work and having NO WORK TO DO until the next morning is a nice change. Homework seems to expand to fill the available time.
No new homeroom? My GOD! The humanity! I don't even remember the point of homeroom? I think it was to keep us all organized into buckets so that if they needed to hand out information or whatever they knew where they would find us at least once a day. Oooh and attendance! I think I always had my head in a book in homeroom so I never really noticed what was going on. I was in a small school too, so there were never new cute guys to look forward to. (Not that I would have noticed, with my book and all.)

Submitted by Karen on Mon, 08/04/2008 - 14:00.Wow, all these haters! I loved high school! I loved college MUCH more, but high school was great. Of course there was drama and some crappy teachers, but overall I learned, I had fun, and I didn't hate my life like I did in middle school.
Actually, I loved it so much that I got my Masters and became certified to teach English, grades 6-12 (before I learned that I hate teaching). My advice to the high schoolers: if you act like you have permission to do something [such as being out of class when you shouldn't be], nine times out of ten no one will call you on it because they'll assume that you're allowed.
That is absolutely true,
Submitted by Cassie on Mon, 08/04/2008 - 14:04.That is absolutely true, Karen. I definitely cashed in on my built-up years as a "good kid" by leaving class for a good 20 minutes or so at a time. Very, very quietly, and with an innocent smile. Of course, it was usually just to go hide in the bathroom to try to breathe and not have an anxiety attack or get completely miserable, but still...
**Flashbacks** LOL.

I dressed down despite that I wasn't on honor roll I was also the freshest dressed guy of the senior class. ** Oh tne memories**

Seriously, does anyone else hate the glow off of those things? They must give you some kind of cancer, they RADIATE for pete's sake! And no, I DO NOT like school in the slightest. Most of the kids are horrible to be around and my school has these uniforms so that we have to wear sweater vests now. With a little leaf on the breast pocket. And somehow they made it so that an elastic band cuts around your middle, showing your gut or cutting off your legs. God I hate private school, even though the classes are fabled to be easier in some cases...

I didn't mind high school so much, most times were a blast, we where a very mischievious bunch. I used to meet my friends outside school and then we'd hide in the bushes until it started so the prefects wouldn't catch us. Then we'd run off to play hooky all day, lol. Other time when we did go in we'd put vicks under our eyes to make us cry, then we'd run out the class room and the rest would tell the teacher they were going to check on us. Somehow I don't think the teaches were that stupid, but they let us get away with it.
My best teacher was my typing teacher. She put us in a room with many typewriters and some work and told us she just expected it by the end of the day, so whenever we got the chance to do it was fine by her. I think I was kinda teaches pet, she was always giving me chocolates
My school was english and afrikaans, and there were way more afrikaans. So the english kids got a bad rep coz we were usually the ones getting up to mischief. Afrikaans kids are so good, they do all their homework and are there like everyday, english kids.............not so much
I missed a huge section of school though when I was in a car accident, still made it all the way through though, without repeating a year. I was happy about that at least.
College was a blast.................probably to much of a blast since I almost failed my first year. But then again I lived in a commune with like 8 other art students, so you can imagine the things that used to happen in that house, lol. Such good time, I'd do it all again

I'll try to enjoy it. I swear!
I'm taking AP Chemistry, American History, and Language/Composition- I know, a suicide mission!
That's pretty much the point of homeroom. My HR teacher is the French teacher and she hates us all!
So glad I go to public school! Freedom of apparel!

In Ohio, high school student
Submitted by Lisa on Tue, 08/05/2008 - 05:57.In Ohio, high school student can take college classes as well, so there were a lot of high schoolers in several of my college classes.
Now this was only a couple of years ago, so you can imagine how annoying it was to an adult (then almost 40) to be surrounded by them. Especially the ones who didn't care about passing the classes. My goal was to graduate with highest honors so I was very serious about doing well.
BTW, I missed my goal by one B. I still graduated with honors, though.
High school was so hellish.
Submitted by Cearbhaill on Mon, 08/18/2008 - 18:49.High school was so hellish. Especially after moving 3/4 of the way through my freshman year to a school that was roughly 3 times bigger than my previous one. College, and grad school, were waaaaaaaay better. Just don't become an elementary school teacher. It's right back into the high school attitude only the women are older and more bitchy. I don't get it. Maybe it's all the time spent with the kids...

Submitted by Tiffany on Fri, 08/22/2008 - 15:29.Really? I remember a few grade school teachers who I thought didn't particularly like me...
Well, these past 3 weeks have been the opposite of heaven.
I've had two tests in Chemistry and I made 66 and 67, respectively. The first test a 60 and above was good because we learned independently. The last, not so much.
Random drama with girls in band who have preconceived notions about me. They aren't above telling my guy friends what they think of me, especially since they are dying for my guy friends' attention anyway.
Serious stress with rigor and homework and extracurriculars and home and LIFE going on. And this is the first 3 weeks!!?!?
But, overall, the new friendships I have made with my endearing stupidity make it worth it!

I have fun the first 3 periods of the day, before Chemistry. However, even Chemistry isn't all that bad because of the cute boy next to me who needs "help" with his homework so he needs to call for "help"...
I foresee good times...
But the stress is sooo not fun. I've been overwhelmed and crying sporadically. Just complete weirdness!

Submitted by Sofie on Wed, 09/10/2008 - 11:04.This feels like an appropriate thread for complaining about school in. I love studying, but right now I need to just get a break. It's 9 pm, and I'm writing a take-home-exam that is to be handed in at noon tomorrow. It's not that the one exam question that I have to do (which isn't even a question, I'm supposed to write a program i Python or Ruby) is difficult, it's just taking me forever and ever to get anywhere at all. And when I do, I loose my train of thought 2 minutes later and end up not remembering what I was going to do. So, this would be a perfect time for you to post another chapter Lothere. No pressure.. I need distraction. But most of all I needed to complain a little.

Submitted by Lothere on Wed, 09/10/2008 - 11:14.If they're giving you a choice between Python and Ruby, rejoice, I say! They could be asking you to write it in C++. *shudders* Ruby hadn't quite made the big time when I was still taking classes so I still haven't bothered to learn it. It is supposed to be a good alternative to Perl so I am planning to give it a look when next I am tempted to write a Perl script.
I actually know just how you feel...when I am tired or hungry (especially hungry) I feel so incredibly STUPID. Just stupid. I can't concentrate on anything for more than a few minutes and I get so easily distracted. I can't write in that situation. I don't even bother to try any more. And that's what happened to me yesterday evening, which is why the next chapter is only 1/4 done! Sorry. Now go have a coffee and write some code.

Submitted by Sofie on Wed, 09/10/2008 - 11:31.Well, it's supposed to be a course in dynamic programming languages, so I don't think C++ would be a good choice. It would have been a very interesting course if the administrators hadn't screwed up and forgotten to tell us when we had lectures, and what we needed to do when to pass the course. Also two of the three lecturers moved to the US during the course, and didn't really care about lecturing or about us learning. All in all, I learned a lot less than I would have liked, and wasted a lot of energy on crappy stuff that didn't matter.
Even if the chapter isn't done, at least you answered me here and gave me a minute of break time and the feeling that someone understands a little.
