Cassie & I were talking
Submitted by Lothere on Wed, 08/06/2008 - 04:55.Cassie & I were talking briefly about this yesterday and I thought it would make a good poll. Now that I have looked up all these chapters, I will have to think about my response for a while!
Links, in chronological order:
I am sure I forgot some, so if I didn't list yours, pick Other and tell us which!
As a runner-up (to me) -- not really graphically disturbing but heart-wrenching all the same -- is "Malcolm takes Iylaine home" on their wedding night. It starts out so sweet, and then Malcolm gradually realizes she's gone...

Submitted by Lothere on Wed, 08/06/2008 - 04:58.Err, I guess "Egelric finds Elfleda" is pretty disturbing too, at least at that point in the story. You don't really see that coming.
Hila sees the most High is
Submitted by Devin on Wed, 08/06/2008 - 05:17.Hila sees the most High is by far the most disturbing chapter of Lothere history. The murders of Mash and Surr and Kia's rape was grotesque.
Two other disturbing
Submitted by Devin on Wed, 08/06/2008 - 05:21.Two other disturbing chapters for me was Egelric finds Elfleda and Egelric enters the nightmare house. Its so sad how he arrived home and found two of his wives dead.
I'm going to say Cat's rape
Submitted by Karen on Wed, 08/06/2008 - 05:41.I'm going to say Cat's rape because it was more detailed than the implied rape in "Hila Sees the Most High". Otherwise I'd pick the second because a little girl getting raped is far worse than an adult woman.
Eh. They're both disturbing. The Egelric chapters don't disturb me really because Maire is asking for it.
I went with Cat's rape too.
Submitted by Lothere on Wed, 08/06/2008 - 06:13.I went with Cat's rape too. The idea of Kia's is more disturbing, but it was never made explicit, whereas Cat's is quite graphic.
The other thing that stops me from picking "Hila sees the most high" is the eerily detached POV in it, since it's being witnessed by a little girl who doesn't understand what's happening. It is agonizing to watch, but it doesn't feel like we are experiencing it in the way we are with Cat's POV.
I think my original plans for the Egelric & Maire chapters are more disturbing than what I eventually wrote. Because, like you said Karen, Maire was asking for it. Maire never does seem quite like a victim, no matter what he does to her.
I think the eerily detached
Submitted by Cassie on Wed, 08/06/2008 - 08:07.I think the eerily detached part of it was what made it so disturbing for me. Cat's rape was certainly horrible and I was very affected by it (especially the last part, with the praying. For whatever reason, that just really got to me.) And you know how disturbed and affected I was by Dasi's death - that was horrible. And obviously the Leofric-Alred one was awful, especially given just how much I love Alred. But Hila sees the most high was the only one that just made me ill. I think I may have actually felt physically sick after reading that, it got to me so much.

I guess I can see that.
Submitted by Lothere on Wed, 08/06/2008 - 08:29.I guess I can see that. There is a sort of cognitive dissonance reading that chapter, like sometimes in movies where there will be a scene of violence or devastation accompanied by pretty, wistful music. Almost more chilling that way.
But perhaps because I wrote them both, Cat's rape is definitely the chapter that made me the most ill. Once I had made the decision to do what I did to those four young elves, writing the chapter wasn't that big an obstacle. Except for the part where Surr was dying and sort of slowly curling up and stretching out on the ground, I don't think I did a lot of detail of the attack or injuries.
But with Cat, writing all the stuff about the knife, and the wound, and the pain, and the blood, and the rape, and the cold ground, and the going blind... that still makes me sick to read it, so you can imagine how I felt writing it. It was also my first really graphic or violent chapter.
I also got pretty shaken writing the Egelric & Maire chapters, especially the first. I tend to get myself pretty worked up whenever anything intense is going on, so I can draw from my own physical experience for details, but that one was particularly overwhelming, as I recall. The sexual part of Cat's rape was pretty business-like compared to that scene.
Maybe I'm just a glutton for
Submitted by Cassie on Wed, 08/06/2008 - 08:42.Maybe I'm just a glutton for punishment...just reread Hila sees the most high, Catan's rape, and Dasi's murder. And to be honest, at this stage I think Dasi's is the worst. Hila sees the most high was the one that horrified me the most the first time I read it, and rereading Cat's, it wasn't as terrible because I knew she survived and is happy now and having a baby. (Not to say that she won't be haunted by that experience forever.) So, I don't know - should we rate on initial impact, or long-term disturbing factor? **Overanalyzes**

I suppose in asking the
Submitted by Lothere on Wed, 08/06/2008 - 10:31.I suppose in asking the question I was thinking more about which chapter was most immediately disturbing. There are probably some past chapters that seem quite mundane on first read, but when you go back and see what they were leading up to, they become disturbing in context. So I definitely wasn't thinking that far.
Does Dasi's death seem so bad to you now because you are one of the few Lar fans out there? It was the first time we really saw the tragedy of his life at all, I think. He did seem somewhat shaken by what they did to Cat, but that chapter was really the first sign of his humanity.
I love that chapter (and find it disturbing) but I have a hard time deciding how much of that is just due to my love of Lar, and how much the chapter on its own merits. I think it's safe to say it didn't disturb me in the same way then that it does now, though the blood and violence was a bit much for my tastes even then.
*scampers off to reread it*
I find "Hila Sees the Most
Submitted by Lisa on Thu, 08/07/2008 - 06:42.I find "Hila Sees the Most High" the most disturbing because the murder & implied rape is happening to children.
I do think you're right
Submitted by Cassie on Thu, 08/07/2008 - 07:42.I do think you're right about that...it has a lot to do with my love of Lar and just seeing the incredible tragedy of him. It was awful and very sad the first time I read it, but now I can hardly bear to read it. It's the last parts of it that get me the most, how had no one left to love and to love him, seeing the last person he cared for die. And that last picture! That's just painful, right there.
Yeah, Hila sees the most high was the one with the biggest impact the first time around. So I will stay with that one.

They're all 'disturbing' in
Submitted by Sonia on Thu, 08/07/2008 - 13:33.They're all 'disturbing' in their own right, but the one that did it for me, was Catan remembers how to say.
The graphic description of her tormentors (including that nasty little short-ass Imin, he's lost my respect now) and her dying moments. That's what caught my attention.
I thought Llen was more
Submitted by Lothere on Thu, 08/07/2008 - 15:43.I thought Llen was more disturbing than Imin in that one. But maybe that is just because I know Llen better than you do so far.
I had such a hard time
Submitted by Choco on Fri, 08/08/2008 - 03:11.I had such a hard time deciding between Cat's rape and Dasi's kids being slaughtered. I wish I could pick both but I couldn't. I chose Hila sees the most high. I guess because they were children as well, makes it all the more harder to digest. Maybe someone could just give Catan remembers how to say a vote for me.
I think they were all very hard to digest.

Submitted by Cearbhaill on Mon, 08/18/2008 - 17:45.While they were all disturbing Hila sees the most high was the most immediately sickening one for me. In my case, though, it has more to do with my mentality than the writing. There's nothing abhor more than violence against children.
