Please excuse my inner mom coming out right now. I just know a decent amount of young people read this and it's something not everyone thinks about.

Don't walk around alone, particularly late at night and if you've been drinking. We live in such an unpredictable world. Many times we get lured into a false sense of security and can let down our guards. It's better to be overly alert and cautious. And I don't just mean that for females.

What makes me feel the need to say that? Over the weekend my younger brother was walking back to his apartment from a friend's party (on a college campus in a "safe" area). He didn't hear anyone coming and was knocked down from behind. He was kicked around, including at least one kick to the head. He remembers nothing between getting knocked down and getting back to his apartment where his roommates called 911. He ended up with stitches over his left eye, which was also swollen shut and is very black, abrasions on his left shoulder and hands, and a fractured vertebra. Nothing was stolen, they just kicked his ass and took off. Please, please, please be careful. Your life and health are way too important to take lightly.

Sorry to take up space for that, but if it keeps one person from having to go through what my brother is right now, it was worth it.
