New site for the story
Submitted by Lothere on Thu, 12/25/2008 - 16:50.
If you're here, you've probably already noticed that the look of the main site has changed. More than the look, in fact -- I ripped WordPress out entirely and replaced it with my own code. So now I can stop hacking WordPress to get medieval dates every time a new release comes out, plus I can add all the features I like now.
OLD:
NEW:
Some new features you will hopefully like:
- Better search options including the ability to search by chapter date ranges (e.g. search for "Egelric" and "Gunnilda" in chapters before 1075 *sigh*)
- More useful search results showing snippets of the chapter with search terms highlighted
- Comment search. Search on your own user name! Find out how many comments you posted! Tremble before Tiana's wrath!
- The option to hide comments while you're reading. Just scroll down to where the comments start and click "Hide comments". If you have cookies enabled it will remember your setting. I don't know if having comments there bothers any non-readers-of-comments but it may make pages load a bit faster, so if you're not reading them anyway...
- Clicking on a month or day in the calender will now show the chapters from oldest to newest. Having them in reverse order might make sense for blogs, but this ain't a blog anymore. (However, the home page does still show the most recent chapters in descending order.)
- Link to "Preview Image" underneath the chapter date and moon phase, if the chapter had its own preview. Now, if you're catching up, you can easily see what people were squealing about in the comments of the previous chapter, or just reminisce if you're rereading.
- Pages wide enough for 600x450 pixel images -- i.e. what most people put on their Sims blogs. You may not have noticed but my images have been 476x357 pixels since Jan of 1085, because any larger wouldn't fit in my wordpress theme. I am still not sure whether I'm going to stick with 600x450... I need to get a feel for that first.
- Smaller banner images. Not sure whether you'll like that, but the important thing to me is that they are not so long-and-skinny now, which will help me make banners that include both Eirik and Sigi without cutting off the head of one or the other. I DON'T HAVE TO KILL EIRIK AFTER ALL!
- Larger fonts, or so I hear. (On Linux all fonts are either xtra-small, small, or ugly)
Some things you probably won't like:
- It seems a bit slower now.* I have a lot of optimization work to do (including the time-honored option of throwing money at the problem and getting a better server) but I couldn't really start on that until I put the new site live.
- We no longer have in-place editing of your comments before the time runs out. I will probably bring that back, but I will have to get off my duff and implement it. For now, if you log in before you post a comment (use your forum user name & password, though you have to log in separate from the forum), it will know it's yours and you will be able to edit or delete it for a while afterwards. It just won't be fancy Ajax in-place scripting magic for now.
- There will be bugs! Bugs are what I do best. If you tell me about them, I am also pretty good at fixing them.
*modest understatement
For now, I am leaving Verso alone (I think & hope it won't be affected by these changes), but I will probably pull that into the fold eventually. However I don't plan to do anything to the forum in the foreseeable future.
I plan on adding some other features I've been wanting for ages -- number 1 is definitely the ability to tag chapters with the characters that actually appear in them. If you clicked on the Egelric + Gunnilda link above, you will have noticed that the results included chapters where one or both don't appear, but someone else is just talking or thinking about them. I REALLY want the ability to search by characters, and have a list of "Chapters Appeared In" on each character's bio page.
I am also open to suggestions. Things you liked about the old site that are missing, or cool things you saw on another site, or things you always wished the site would do...
And PLEASE tell me if there's anything you DON'T like. Too dark? Too hard to read? Broken in your browser? You all are so nice I am afraid you will sit there and suffer (or worse, stop reading). Please just tell me. I make Web sites for a living so I am used to people telling me "that's nice but if you could just change..." and I am definitely used to bug reports and other bulletins about how much my work has sucked and continues to suck.*
*modest exaggeration
I am also a back-end developer and not a Web designer, and I am well aware that design (and choice of color) is not my thing. And that I like sitting in dark rooms and have very, very bright monitors. I made something that pleases and amuses me, but the site is not about my vanity or my artistic aspirations, so if you have some constructive criticism, do share. My only goal with the main part of the site is to make something that sets off the images and the prose nicely, and makes it easy to get lost in the story. That's how I measure my success, so you see, it's all about you and the story, and not about me at all. I promise I won't be offended.
P.S. Please tell me if I have screwed up things in your RSS feed reader! I am emitting my own RSS feed now, which is a first for me.

I noticed that the actual text is narrower now, to fit with the width of the pics. (Or maybe the text was always 600 pixles wide, but I never knew the exact width, and now the pics are as wide.) I looks strange to me right now, but I think that's something I'll get used to quickly and probably like when I do.
I love the "Chapters Appeared In" idea. I think I would use that a lot. Tell us if you need any help listing old chapters for characters or something like that. I'm sure there's a lot of people her who wouldn't hesitate to go through a large piece of the story and make a list of characters or chapters. Devin might take it upon himself to find all Sela, Maud and Elfleda chapters.. And Verity would do Brude, and I could do Eirik and Sigi and Malcolm.. And Alred for Cassie..
Well done!

I don't have time to read through over 1600 chapters to do it... and some of you are rereading anyway...The tricky part is that I am going to have to add a lot of insignificant characters to the database now. And what about Sweetdew and Belsar?? I will have pets in my family tree!

I miss that forum linkage
Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 12/26/2008 - 06:31.I miss that forum linkage too! I shall put that on my list of things to do. I'll put verso back, too, while I'm at it.
I was actually considering just doing one "latest comment" stream that includes the ten (or more?) most recent comments from any source -- i.e. the story, the forum, Verso, and other things that may include comments. (I'm thinking of allowing comments on character's bio pages too, since we tend to discuss those things on the Family Tree page... which I just noticed is missing. )
Do you think people would rather see all comments together? Or keep only the most recent story comments on the story pages, and only have the latest 1 from the forum, to keep them separate? *ponders*
I like the idea of publish dates too, though they won't be exact for all of the old chapters I imported. This is because I have been using the published date field to store the "story date", and the published date you are seeing now is actually the "last updated" date from WordPress. So for now the so-called published dates are just the last-modified dates.
I already had my first comment spam too. Gaaahhhh! I thought I would at least have a few days before I had to deal with that. I guess that's what I get for naming the comment fields "Email" and "Url" and "Comment" So simple even a spam bot can figure that out.

First I think I want to add a way to turn features like that off on a per-user basis though. Some people are just here to read and don't want to be distracted by blinky names -- or even a list of "recent comments" probably.
But you can see why I'm thinking about the best way to integrate all the "community" type features... right now we have comments on the story, comments in the forum, comments on Verso, and the chat -- and 3 separate places to log in (forum, chat, and story site) -- and no one knows who is where or doing what unless they are also there and doing the same thing. And we could use Private Messages don't you think? Makes my head hurt just thinking about it. In a fun way.

I was working on the assign-characters-to-chapters functionality, but the bookmarking thing will be a heckuvalot easier. Maybe I will just switch priorities.
Err, if you want something, just say WANT and I will try to do it. Don't be shy. At work we have a business analyst who does the figuring-out-what-users-want part. Left to my own devices I just putter randomly about my code.
Hmmm... I've never mentioned
Submitted by PenelopetheFox on Mon, 04/06/2009 - 08:52.Hmmm... I've never mentioned this before but the site looks really weird on my work computer. I can never see the banner photo and some of the little leafy decorations. It's just big gray squares. Also, some of the smilies in the smilie menu are HUGE! And for some reason, the main page menu bar appears layered over top of the forum menu bar. Is it my security settings or something? I'm using Internet Explorer (version 6.0) and my operating system is Vista Professional (if that makes a difference).
It's because you're using IE
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 04/06/2009 - 09:06.It's because you're using IE 6. When I made the new site I consciously chose not to make any special efforts to support that browser. I can't tell you how many hours I "waste" at work getting sites to work halfway-decently in IE6, but a lot of schools and government agencies still have a lot of old IE6 installations around, and that's who many of our clients are, so... I'm stuck with it at work.
But this site is supposed to be fun.
The "gray squares" problem is due to IE6's inability to support PNG images with alpha transparencies. That is, a PNG image where some of the pixels are not 100% transparent or 100% opaque (which is all you get in a GIF image with transparencies) but at various percentages in between. IE just displays everything that's less than 100% transparent as a gray pixel.
The banner image is actually a background image with another mostly-transparent PNG layered on top of it, which is how I get the little scrolly flowers to overlap the preview banner. But since IE 6 displays the scrolly image as all gray... you can't see the background at all. I suppose I could hide the little scrolly flower image for IE6, that wouldn't be much work and wouldn't degrade the experience for people with better browsers. At least you could see the preview then.
I am clueless about the smileys. Is that the smileys in the main site or on the forum? Which ones are huge?
I am not sure what you mean about the menu bars and stuff, but IE 6 has some quirks when it comes to rendering complicated layouts, so it's probably something to do with that. I don't know how I could fix that without altering the layout for everyone, and risking breaking that, and I don't want to go there. I'm just going to sit tight and wait for IE 6 to go extinct.
My diagnosis is: you obviously need a better job where they give you a 21st century browser.
The saddest part is, I work

And on second glance, the menu bar thing (which looked like a totally impossible glitch earlier) is just the images from this thread spilling over into the sidebar. D'oh!
I should just switch over to Firefox. I have that installed but I never use it for some reason.

If you can't log into either site with Safari, then it must be some kind of Safari cookie problem. Ok, my laptop is aged and decrepit so the battery shuts off randomly every once in a while. It did that a few days ago and I had to turn it back on by reseting the PRAM. And when the machine re-started, it thought that it was 1969. So I reset the time and date to the actual time and date. THEN the computer did not register the adjustment but made another adjustment of its own which should have technically taken me to 2049 BUT MacOSX does not allow you to set the date beyond 2037. SO for days, my machine has been thinking that it's 2037 and I had not noticed. But then I was getting all sorts of weird messages from Safari AND Firefox saying things like, "The security certificate for www.google.com has expired." And umm... Yeah, eventually it dawned on me to check the date my system was displaying.
Anyway, I don't know why that was keeping me from logging on here but it was.

And yeah this is not the first time I've seen total random craziness from computers being set too far in the past or future, but I was under the impression it was just my site causing problems. If you had mentioned the Google security certificate having expired I would have twigged straightaway.

I seem to be getting a lot of fake traffic to random pages lately, perhaps spam bots scoping out the place, and it has overloaded the database twice now in the past few days. I will have to be looking into that.
