Wall limit reached, or, A Sad Day For Sigefrith
Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 02/01/2009 - 11:06.
Did you know there is a limit to the number of wall segments that can be built on a single lot? Neither did I! Until today!
I was working on Sigefrith's castle this morning for an upcoming chapter (I know, I know -- "Lothere, where are these upcoming chapters you keep talking about?" ) and suddenly I could no longer build walls. Then I noticed that if I deleted a wall segment I could build again... one more wall segment.
After some research I found that there is a limit of about 2000 wall segments per lot. More info at sexysims2.com if you're curious.
So now I don't know what to do. Apparently if I use Numenor's Unlevel Walls I can add more walls, because they have their own separate 2000-wall-limit, but they appear to be buggy, so...
Or (what I suppose I will eventually do) I will have to delete some interior walls in rooms that I am not yet using and haven't yet decorated, so I can build the walls I need for actual chapters. I have the castle plans all drawn out so I can remember where they went.
Eventually as I come to need various rooms I will hit the limit again, but I guess we will all be playing Sims 4 by the time I need to do a chapter in the servant's potty or whatever. Still.
I'm sure you're wondering what a castle with over 2000 wall segments looks like so I'm attaching some pictures I took this morning. My camera actually cannot get back far enough to show the whole castle in one shot, it's that huge. Also, Loþeresburh has far more than 2000 wall segments since nearly the entire ground floor is built of foundation walls, which are not counted in the 2000-wall limit either. Unfortunately they can't be used on upper floors...

Submitted by Van on Sun, 02/01/2009 - 13:38.Uhhhh, I'm sorry, but I still find Caedwulf's attachment to his mother a little creepy... although I suppose it's understandable, given how old he was when she died... but still... ugh.
It does create some interesting drama, though.

Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 02/01/2009 - 14:27.I know, I was recently rereading "Caedwulf says the saddest thing" and found this part a little creepy:
The idea of a 16-year-old boy finding his mother's hips to be "just round enough and just firm enough" is a little ooky.
It's funny, I never intended their characters to grow in this direction at all, but both Sigefrith and Caedwulf seem a little creepy to me at times when rereading old chapters. Sigefrith with his slight tendencies towards pedophilia, and Caedwulf with his weird, slightly sexual and therefore incestuous love for his mother. WTF, really??
There's also "Britamund raises a martyr's prayer" with this whole death cult thing he has going on, regularly bringing flowers to his mother's tomb, and keeping it clean, and KISSING HER COFFIN for crying out loud. A hint of necrophilia too while we're at it?
I feel so sorry for Ogive... even if he hadn't gone gaga over Cecily, poor scrawny, freckle-faced Ogive will never be "just round enough and just firm enough" nor "petal-cheeked" enough for him. Even though she is superior to Maud in just about every other way.
Anyway, Devin, enough of making you clench your teeth... to answer your question, yes, Sigefrith's castle is far and away the biggest construction in Lothere. It's not the biggest lot -- all the big castles like Nothelm and even some of the other lots like the village lots are using the largest lot size available in the Sims. But obviously, it's the biggest castle, as befits the king.
I can't believe you said
Submitted by Devin on Sun, 02/01/2009 - 14:37.I can't believe you said that scrawny girl is superior to Maud. At least Maud had depth to her character.

Ogive has oodles of depth. I can't wait to write more about her.

Ogive isn't ugly you know, just plain imo.

Submitted by Van on Sun, 02/01/2009 - 15:39.I agree with Devin, I wouldn't exactly call Ogive "ugly". She's plain, yes, but she's not ugly a la, say, Cenwulf and Colburga's daughters (which I'm taking your word for from some forum topic or another).
At least Caedwulf does seem to like Ogive as a friend, if nothing more. Maybe they won't be having passionate, Alred-and-Matilda-esque sex every night, but I can see them staying up late talking about politics.
Yeah I can definitely see
Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 02/01/2009 - 15:50.Yeah I can definitely see that. He likes her a lot... "as a friend", as they say. I just wonder how Ogive is going to feel when Caedwulf gets up after a long evening of "staying up late talking about politics" and goes off to visit Mistress of the Month or whatever he has going on by that time. Leaving Ogive all alone in her bed.

Submitted by Van on Sun, 02/01/2009 - 16:08.I hope he settles down with Ogive. Or maybe he'll be kind of a Leofric--not above a little afternoon delight with a maid every once in a while, or even a semi-long-term affair with a mistress, but he'll have an undeniable place in his heart for his wife.

Submitted by Devin on Sun, 02/01/2009 - 17:38.I know I'm going to be the odd one out again but I'm not for Caedwulf and Ogive's relationship since he's not in love with her. If Cecily was to ever arrive at the valley; I could see her, Caedwulf, and Ogive living in a Ménage à trois relationship. Like that of Leofric or like Georgina, Duchess of Devonshire with her husband and his mistress.
Caedwulf and Ogive do seem
Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 02/01/2009 - 17:59.Caedwulf and Ogive do seem like the kind of couple ripe for one of those sudden "Oh my God, she's the one I love!" moments, preferably right as Ogive is lying at death's door, and the realization strikes Caedwulf in time to save her.
In fact they seem so obviously made for such a story that I probably won't do it. I am sure I have enough hackneyed plot devices in my story that I'm not aware of, I had better not consciously allow any to slip in. But it makes me a little sad.
Hmm... I could see Caedwulf
Submitted by Van on Sun, 02/01/2009 - 18:40.Hmm... I could see Caedwulf eventually falling in love with Ogive without necessarily being sexually attracted to her. That might be an interesting dynamic.

Submitted by stacysaurus on Sun, 02/01/2009 - 20:17.Yeah, I am pro-Caedwulf+Ogive. I think even if he is not in love with her, he still loves her (I don't know if that makes sense). At least, it seems that he seems to respect and admire her a great deal. They just seem kind of perfect for each other, although maybe lacking in passion.
But oh well, even without the Caedwulf... Ogive kicks ass

I will admit, however, that making lovable female characters is not my forte.
EDIT: Van, the off-topicness is balm to my wounded heart. The Sad Day was actually my own. I would go so far as to buy an EP if it would allow me to break the 2000-wall limit.
Your male characters are
Submitted by Van on Sun, 02/01/2009 - 22:35.Your male characters are generally more lovable, yes, but you also have quite a few great female characters. Ogive, definitely, and Britamund, Wynflaed, Hetty, Matilda, Edris, Sela, Aia, Lili, Margaret, Gunnie, Githa, Sigi, Synne... shall I go on? I'm also personally a fan of both Gwynn and Eadie, even though I know they annoy some people.
I kind of have the same problem though. I've been dabbling in writing for a lot longer than I've actually bothered posting stuff, and if I were to randomly take any of my male characters and any of my female characters and compare their likability, nineteen times out of twenty, the guy would win. I don't know why that is. I imagine that as a girl, I tend to subconsciously give a lot of my male characters qualities that I myself find attractive and lovable in men. It might be the same sort of thing for you.
I'm just surprised that Maxis felt it necessary to include a wall limit. Most people would probably never reach it, and those few determined souls who do can only be frustrated with it. They really shouldn't have bothered.
Oh yeah, I forgot about
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 02/02/2009 - 05:38.Oh yeah, I forgot about Britamund, Wynflaed, Hetty, Matilda, Edris, Sela, Aia, Lili, Margaret, Gunnie, Githa, Sigi, and Synne.
And you forgot Kraaia, my current personal favorite.
I am not sure the 3-dimensionality of my male characters comes from me piling them with things I would find attractive in a guy though. Unless it's so unconscious that it's both unintentional, and involves things I never knew I liked about men. I just happen to have grown up in a neighborhood where there were only boys to play with, and studied and worked in engineering and the sciences, where the male-to-female ratio is often extremely skewed. I've only ever had one close female friend in my life. I just don't know women all that well, other than my own fumbling through the experience. (Somehow I came through this still wearing mascara and having a coat-shopping fetish? Must be hormonal.)
So I suspect I have a hard time creating believable women. Either they lack depth, or the depth is wrong. And if your readers don't believe your characters, there's little hope of them liking them. I think my best female characters have all been rather mannish in their various ways... Matilda, Sigi, Brit, Ogive, and Kraaia come to the front of my list, both in likeability (for me personally anyway) and mannishness.
The only character that I love who is not mannish is Hetty. And I think Hetty is definitely a case of fantasy fulfillment, as in me piling a character with everything I would love in a woman... to be.
As for the wall limit, as a programmer, I can tell you the problem is usually the opposite... you have to pick a limit, and oftentimes for reasons of efficiency (either speed or RAM-usage) you want to make it as small as possible. So you try to minimize it while not being so small that it will often be reached. It was a trade-off somewhere. I just happened to go beyond both their "normal" and "no one will ever use this many" usage scenarios and off into the crazy-Sims-lady stratosphere. Bully for me!

Submitted by PenelopetheFox on Mon, 02/02/2009 - 06:25.Would it be out of the question to plop down a second lot next to Sigefrith's castle as a sort of annex?
Or does that venture off into the realms of building sets?
Well, true, there's that
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 02/02/2009 - 07:19.Well, true, there's that option too. There are plenty of rooms in Sigefrith's castle that aren't really visible from any other, so I could just build an empty shell where those rooms are and build "sets" off-lot for the interiors. They wouldn't have to be next to the castle of course... in fact I surely wouldn't put them next to the castle, since I might someday want a chapter set outside in the outer bailey, and that would need to have a view on the castle itself.
I thought about literally splitting the castle between two lots way back when I started building, since there are essentially two separate stone parts that are only connected by a gate with a daub-and-wattle structure overtop. But that wouldn't work either, since one of the next chapters I'm shooting there will be outside in the inner court, where I will need to be able to see both "halves" of the castle in their non-pixelated glory.
I guess what I will do is delete interior walls (I definitely need all the exterior walls) in unused rooms so I can build up the rooms I'm using. And only if I ever reach the hard limit again with all the rooms I'm actually using will I break out the Unlevel walls, or some other hack. Hopefully that day will never come.
It is very important to me to be able to visualize the layout of the castles and villages I'm writing about, which is why I don't build "sets", but I do have a building plan drawn up for this castle, so I suppose that will suffice...
