Favorite characters
Submitted by Cassie on Fri, 06/05/2009 - 06:25.
So, obviously we all talk about our favorite characters ALL THE TIME, but sometimes we all surprise each other with the ones we love the most, and I thought it would be cool (and challenging!) to narrow it down a bit.
So, pick your ten favorites, living or dead, ranked in order or not, in whichever way you choose.
Here are mine:
Alred (The shock, I feel it.)
Matilda
Lili
Egelric
Eirik
Sigrid
Lar
Gwynn
Vash
Cat
It was difficult (and I might decide to change my picks later on...)
Also, this is my VERY FIRST forum topic. Who'd have thunk it?

Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 06/05/2009 - 07:26.For me, it's very hard to separate "favorite" from "favorite to write" so that's what you'll get. Egelric alone should take up the top four spots of my top ten list, he is just that complex and compelling. Even if he is a selfish, sullen bastard.
Here we go, probably no surprises here:
Egelric
Lar
Alred
Aelfden
Leofric
Sigefrith
Eirik
Matilda
Gwynn
Osh
For what it's worth, they're not exactly ranked, but that's the order in which they came to mind. If I attempted to sort them, my ranking probably would not be much different. Alred woud probably come before Lar.
Also, I had Imin as #10 until I remembered Osh. I suppose that overall Vash is probably more of a "favorite" to me than Osh, but Vash has never been as much fun to write as Osh. Osh is just so... internally luminous somehow. And at the same time internally shadowed. "Fun" probably isn't the best word to describe writing Osh either, but whatever. Meanwhile Vash is just cranky and angsty whenever we get into his head. Osh is a real pleasure to write and discover, whereas Vash... meh.
I expect Vash will soar up into the top 10 in 1086 however. There's surely as much or more to Vash as to Osh, but we haven't had the chance to see much of it yet. We've had some inklings of that in his pained interactions with Kraaia. Hopefully the trend will continue.
And if I had 11 spots I would have to put Finn...
I suspect Devin's interest in Ralf is of recent vintage and Aia-related.

And order.
x Cenwulf - after his death. snifsnif.
x Edris - silly Edris.
x Eirik - he has grown.
x Hedwig - silly Hetty.
x Kív - niaaaauts, I love every glance of him. That's not common! :'D
x Leofric - I didn't like him at first, but affairs with Matilda change everything.
x Young Malcolm - he has been always quite charismatic.
x Sigefrith - my very first "favourite character". Before him everything was just some.. mush.
x Young Sigefrith - that's treacherous. Like with my avatar: suddenly I realized that he's awesome.
And the last one iiiiis.. MYRDDIN! >D

Submitted by Cassie on Fri, 06/05/2009 - 10:29.Inneresting choices, ermine. Especially Cenwulf and Edris!
I do feel like overall, there are more really great, developed male characters in the story, but there are definitely some real Great Women, too. (Matilda being particularly special, in my mind and in others', I'm sure.)
I do, after all, have my Small, Spirited Women list: Matilda, Lili, and Sigrid. (Love.) And if we were in, say, 1083, Iylaine would definitely be on my top 10 list, but she's just kind of been eclipsed for me by some other really wonderful characters of late.

Ah, there are so many men on
Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 06/05/2009 - 10:50.Ah, there are so many men on my favorite list... either a cause or an effect of the dominance of male-related storylines in this story. I have a hard time thinking of good female-related episodes that don't have to do with either (1) a complicated romance (2) catty backstabbing drama (3) women making an impact in a men's world (Sigi, Matilda to some extent...). I can't just write chapters where ladies are sitting around cooing over their babies or something.
Obviously the problem is mine... I'm not saying there aren't other sorts of storylines (or that the above 3 aren't interesting), it's just that I have a harder time dreaming up and writing those. Maybe it's because I write too much about noble women, who have fairly drama-free lives unless they cook up their own.
At least there are the girls and their growing-up stories. And maybe I'll do something with Ffraid and Uallach next year. Both characters with problems outside of the 3 themes above. And someone else whom I won't mention yet, lest Devin immediately start with the scheming and the plotting and the matchmaking.
Oh, and Ogive!!! I probably couldn't fit her in my top 10 but she would likely be in the top 20. And she's just getting started.

Young Malcom - He makes me drool.
Alwy
Gwynn - I am expecting a lot from her.
Old Man
Leofric - He is so awful. Though I'm a bit dissappointed of his fondness with Hetty.
Eirik - I like him a lot, even if he's a bit too perfect.
Ilyaine - She is such an annoying character. I hate her and love her at the same time.
Aelfden
Kraaia - a lost kitten.
Yay! A Kraaia fan! The Old
Submitted by Lothere on Sat, 06/06/2009 - 15:35.Yay! A Kraaia fan!
The Old Man is an interesting choice too. Sensitive little fellow, but so painfully cuuuute! Especially in some of his earlier chapters, like the one where he cut his own hair, and advised his father that it probably wasn't worth a spanking. Or when he went to talk to Eadie under "false pretendses". ("That's what I said!" *growls*) Back in his "want to put ketchup on his head and eat him" days. But I do think he will grow up to be quite a fascinating young man...

Submitted by maria on Sun, 06/07/2009 - 00:39.It was not really the cuteness. He IS really cute and funny, but this is the top ten list after all. I think it was the little boy trying to keep his world in one piece which finally melted my heart.
It was tough making this
Submitted by Verity on Fri, 06/12/2009 - 12:00.It was tough making this list but I think I narrowed it down. I will try and make some sort of order to it also but it might fall apart a bit in the end:
Leofric - so complex and so very, very phwoar
Brude/Araphel - everyone loves a tortured, fallen angel type (oh no wait... that's just me )
Magog - Who doesn't love a man who growls when he's kissing?
Young Malcom - He may move up the list if we get some more shirtless chapters (in the rain?) - seriously though. He has been a favourite since he was a little kid punching noses on baby's behalf
Hetty - Poor, dear sweet little Hetty. I can't not love her.
Mouse - Awesomeness in a tiny, red-booted format
Gunnie - In some ways the most hardly done by woman in Lothere (can't she please have some romance... with a cherry on top? Or an Egelric *snicker*.)
Meggie - she has such potential for awesomeness it is not even funny
Sigrid - I always thought she was slightly insipid but now she is a princess leia-bunned, sword wielding warrior maiden. With great non-plucked eyebrows. What's not to love?
Alred - He has to be there but he nearly wasn't. He better pull his finger out soon or he is going to be bumped of my list by someone else (shirtless K is a contender but only because he has a pornstar mustache and a kilt... personality is not really a factor when eclipsed by these sorts of things).

Submitted by Cassie on Fri, 06/12/2009 - 12:58.A rather female-dominated list...inneresting. Gunnilda was a serious favorite of mine back in the Gunnilda + Egelric days, but she's sort of stagnated for me lately (not to mention the fact that I've lost patience with her a little bit...)

Submitted by Verity on Fri, 06/12/2009 - 13:05.Thanks Cassie . It was a very nice place... so so beautiful. An amazingly gorgeous church on every corner.
When I started making the list I thought it was male dominated but more and more of the girls started making their way in. I am quite sure that at some stage I am going to go "oh yeah... I forgot *insert character here* they are more my favourite". We will see. Other characters have been my favourite at other times eg. I used to love Cat but I have gone off them. So I don't imagine this can be a fixed thing. My favourite characters are probably quite changeable. The most enduring is Leofric. He has done so many bad things and still I love him so I don't think that is going to change. I love him for his flaws.
Hmm... I like your list. But

Yeah, the favorites
Submitted by Cassie on Fri, 06/12/2009 - 13:32.Yeah, the favorites definitely do shift...a few months ago I never would have thought Gwynn would be on my top 10, but she's really been rising rapidly in the ranks of late.
But there are some really consistent ones, for sure. Alred will *always* make my list, as will Matilda, and most likely Eirik, Sigrid, and Lili. I'm a HUGE fan of all of them...the really difficult part came in naming characters after that.

That was a great list
Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 06/12/2009 - 13:53.That was a great list Verity. Not only did I LOL, but you made Magog seem phwoarier than ever. *sigh*
In my list, I think I made it as far as Sigefrith before I had to stop and think. Some of them are just so obvious, but others do rise and fall. Both Lar and Aelfden, when I introduced them, I never dreamt I would come to love them so much. Leof too, for that matter.
Why are you out of patience with Gunnilda, Cassie? Has she gone petty or something? I think she's been short-shrifted lately by her writer. I have a hard time getting excited about the good ol' gosh-darn matronly, housewifely, font-of-home-cooked advice-and-good-pie type of character that she becomes whenever Egelric's not around to rile her up.
I think my favorite chapter with her is "Gunnilda has an unexpected visitor", when Egelric is so so low, and he comes to her not even humble but in ruins, and they sit silently and hold hands, and then..... Wynnie comes in.
I find Gunnilda to be at her best when Egelric is at his lowest -- the rest of the time I do think Egelric has tended to look down on her a wee bit, and Gunnilda was exasperatingly content with that. It would do him some good to be looked down upon by her. It would do him some good to say "I need you."
Anyway, that's rather off-topic, but Egelric is currently about as low as he's ever been, so it's a subject that is often on my mind of late...
I think I've gotten a little
Submitted by Cassie on Fri, 06/12/2009 - 14:53.I think I've gotten a little fed up with her naivete when it comes to sex and love, and her absolute refusal to let herself feel any kind of desire for Ethelmund (which I think she could, if she let herself.) I can't blame her for her idealism surrounding Egelric (I'm very much guilty of that with someone myself, so I can judge), but she seriously needs to grow up a little. She's almost forty years old, for heaven's sake.
I absolutely love that chapter, too. So beautiful, and I love the description of Egelric's hands...

Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 06/12/2009 - 16:06.It would be interesting to see how her relationship with Ethelmund has been going lately. Their last chapter together was "Gunnilda uses her last arm" back in January, when Ethelmund was devastated over the loss of another child. And the last time we saw Ethelmund, a month later, Myrddin was pushing him to have a heart-to-heart with his wife. So maybe...

Margaret
YEAH ANSON IS ON THE LIST. Even though he hasn't been in that many chapters, I am really intrigued by him.
Anyway, it was really hard to pick my favorite characters, because there's characters that I really like to read about, even though I might not necessarily like them very much. Like I love any chapter with Iylaine, even though I don't really like her. And I really like Conrad, in the chapters with Margaret. And Araphel too, and Cian. I'm pretty sure there's probably some characters I'm forgetting, though...

I have some terrible time
Submitted by ermine on Sun, 06/14/2009 - 07:21.I have some terrible time with that last one seat in my list. O____O I haven't still decide it. Too many choices.
With underages, I have thought Emma, Gwynn, the Old Man, Cedric, Caedwulf, even Drage. Emma has been always, from her sickness at leats, one of my favourite kids in this story, even she hasn't many chapters. ;3 She's just so.. mesmerizing. :'D She already was in my list, but I dropped her. Gwynn is very sympathetic and she seems to have much potential, but after all she doesn't really make me yell, "yee, Gwynn" everytime I see her(some characters really make >D). Maybe after few years, or before. I want turning point! Old Man.. haha. I love his.. non-harmlessness. ;D Cedric is great, but secretly: his - father. When I start to think that he's own character, it's better. Same with Caed-boy. Drage.. umh. Like Emma, from very start. He could drown kitties and I just laugh.
With adults, there's more. Awws, Shósúdín. >D (With his apostrophes..) Now I can't pick. I thought Ósh, but njah, there's already Kív, and I thought Iylaine, but..
Or.. maybe I give up and just take my Sebright.

Sir Malcolm
Alred
Gwynn
Leila
Paul
Gaethine
Kraaia
Margaret
Cedric
Dunstan
My favorite POV characters are a bit different, though... we've only had one chapter with Cynan's POV so far, but now I want another! Go Blocky Boy! Conrad annoys me :concern: I like Dunstan's POV a lot... also Ogive's. You'll notice that neither Leofric nor Egelric appear here. Egelric was only one of my favorites while married to Elfleda for some reason; I didn't mind Leofric too much until the whole Hetty ordeal. I know that Alred was not the most attentive husband (putting it mildly here ) at the time, but since I've always liked Alred more than Leofric, I'm going to blame Leof for destroying him. AGAIN. Epecially ince he already has Eadgith, and has had her ever since we met him (pretty much)! I don't blame Hetty though; Alred never should have 1.)not come clean about the poem in the first place, 2.)came clean waaaay after he married her while drunk, and 3.) not reassured her that he loved her after telling her. Plus there's the way he's treating her now. BAD ALRED.

Interesting list, to feature neither Leof nor Egelric. You seem to like the good guys. Except for Paul and his occasional flashes of his serial killer side, I guess.
Dunstan and not the Old Man?
Dang it, your reply reminded
Submitted by Bastet on Mon, 01/17/2011 - 21:26.Dang it, your reply reminded me. I do mostly like the good guys, except for I like Dantalion better than any of the other supernaturals. I'll replace either Cedric or Dunstan with him. Araphel also annoys me, although I'm starting to recognize a pattern here; Vash annoyed (past tense) me, Conrad does, so does Araphel, Cearball too... hey, as soon as I pick a guy I like for a girl, I am seemingly unable to like the competition. I only started liking Vash once he unbound himself from Iylaine! Oh no! The only exception is that I like both Malo and Eadred. Maybe that's because I dislike Cearball without any extra help from Connie competition
And as for the Old Man... I like him, but unfortunately cuteness isn't enough to get him on my list. Maybe when he's older

My favourite character(s)...
Submitted by Herr Burgermeister (not verified) on Sun, 02/13/2011 - 19:14.My favourite character(s)... hmmm....
Egelric.
That's it. With possibly the addition of Sigfrith and Alred. Ah, and the only couple - Cenwulf and Colburga.
Now some you you may say - Couples? What about Alred and Matilda. My response - yeah. Hypocrite. And I'm not referring to Alred. Alred has my sympathies.
Egelric, because he seems to be the most stable (sort of) character in the bunch. Yes, he has his troubles, but he knows the lay of the land and trods through it expecting bumps and jostles along the way. He seems to receive nothing but the short end of the fuzzy lollipop. He's almost a hero for me; not yet having replaced Charlie Brown or Ziggy.
