Introducing the random questions forum
Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 09/27/2009 - 15:29.
I just posted a reply to Devin's random question thread, and it appeared on PAGE NINE. So I decided that we should maybe start doing this a little differently.
In the future, if you have a random question that you would have tacked onto the end of your thread (those of you who have one), I would like it if you posted a new forum topic in the Random Questions forum instead. This has a couple of advantages:
- Since you can give a forum topic a title, it will help people who are skimming the forum to see what the question is about, if it's a character or topic that really interests them.
- Likewise in the "What's new in the forum" sidebar on the main site, people will be able to see what the question is about and be more tempted to click over than by another "Random question that So-and-so has" post
- It will be a lot easier to search the forum if there are more shorter topics with titles that refer to the actual topic of discussion, instead of a few long topics that talk about everyone and everything.
- Most importantly (to me anyway) the pagination on the forum is rather wonky for multi-page topics: if a topic has multiple pages and you click on the link to the latest comment, you won't go straight to the latest comment. You will instead go to page 1, and THEN have to click on the highest page, and THEN you see the comment. I don't know about you guys but this drives me batty. (*imagine :batty: smiley here*)
This isn't like a "RULE" or anything... I don't care if topics get totally off-topic and have nothing to do with the original random question. We can talk about whatever, wherever. And I don't care if you post more than one question at a time, or even if the title is just "Another random question from Devin" if you can't think of a good title. I'm just afraid you guys felt like your random questions were not important enough to warrant their own threads -- but on the contrary, it's probably easier and more fun that way.
So have at it. And if you have any thoughts about why this is actually a bad idea (or if you don't know HOW to create a forum topic ) just say so.

And yay, Finn soon! Isn't it crazy how quickly he's become an OMG FAVORITE?!?!?
Oh Finnie, teenage heartthrob!

Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 05/20/2011 - 06:22.Nope. To the best of my knowledge Cuan would be pronounced "KOO-ahn." It's the diminutive of Cú (meaning dog). Likewise Cian is pronounced "KEE-ahn."
If there's a "Keen" in the house, it would probably be spelled Caín (with the accent on the i) or Caoin. But I don't know if that was a real name.
Thanks, Jenny! At first I

Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 05/20/2011 - 06:44.There always seem to be lots of extra vowels in Gaelic because the vowels next to a consonant change the way it's pronounced, sometimes dramatically. (Like the D in Diarmait being pronounced more like a J, because of the I that's there.) So sometimes you have to toss in an extra slender vowel (I or an E) to make the consonant do what you want, if you want the main vowel of the syllable to be a broad vowel (A, O, or U). Or vice versa.
In modern Gaelic, in fact, the vowels on either side of a consonant must match (in terms of being slender or broad). So you just keep tossing vowels in until everything is balanced and you get the sounds you want.

I worry about mispronouncing names that I see in print before I hear them out loud.
