The embarrassment that is my public school system

This speaks for itself.

I think the more shocking
Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 12/11/2009 - 20:03.I think the more shocking thing is that "sodomy" is still a criminal charge applicable to oral sex in your state.
I was confused by that,
Submitted by Tiffany on Fri, 12/11/2009 - 20:12.I was confused by that, because the two kids were different genders. But yeah, that's the Bible Belt for ya. Why sodomy=oral sex, I will never know.
But this story is the talk of the town. The students are whispering about it, the teachers are shaking their heads, and the board members are wringing their hands. What was so important that you had to do IN the class with people watching? You couldn't excuse yourselves in the bathroom or hallway? I would have definitely told as soon as I saw it. That is despicable.
And the sad thing is, it's more common to get caught in middle than high school.

And I had no idea you were from Warner Robins. Hallo! When did you get out of this boring city?

Submitted by Devin on Sat, 12/12/2009 - 07:47.That's just plain stupid, to have oral sex in a classroom, while the teacher and other students are present.
Exactly. I just thought.
Submitted by Tiffany on Sat, 12/12/2009 - 08:14.Exactly.
I just thought. That gives a whole new meaning to "head of the class".

I guess the whole "sodomy" = any kind of sexual acts that are not heterosexual vaginal intercourse thing is still in effect there, then. (Between a married couple, with their eyes closed, not enjoying it, naturally.) It also makes me think of "NO SODUMIE!" of course.
Really, though: WHO DOES THAT??

Submitted by Rebecca on Sat, 12/12/2009 - 13:03.My family moved to Eastman when I was 6. I don't know if you have heard of it. It is about 45 minutes away and even more boring. We go to Warner Robins for fun, actually. But now I am at VSU.
Wait- Why is the substitute
Submitted by PenelopetheFox on Sat, 12/12/2009 - 15:15.Wait- Why is the substitute undergoing disciplinary charges? There were probably 40 students in that class. If she didn't catch them immediately, it'll be because she was walking around, doing her job and not in the least expecting that she could look up and find 8th graders engaging in oral sex.
UPDATE: The substitute was
Submitted by Tiffany on Sun, 12/13/2009 - 12:19.UPDATE: The substitute was fired by the board of education, my old principal, to be exact. There will be a hearing for the students on Monday.
Yeah, I've heard of Eastman! I think we played them in something. My cousin went to VSU! Do you like it there?
Oh as far as class size

Submitted by maruutsu on Sun, 12/13/2009 - 13:19.That's the largest number of students in a public school? That's the max for private schools around here (I had 20 classmates in my private school last year). Public schools have more than 40 students per class. One more reason to move to North America.
Let us know how that meeting goes!
I say max for my district.
Submitted by Tiffany on Sun, 12/13/2009 - 13:35.I say max for my district. And we have one one of the better school districts in the state considering our demographics. And I say max because of my own personal experience and because I'm almost positive that it was an academic class. There are about 35 kids in my health class.
I will definitely update you guys about the hearing!
That was the case with me
Submitted by Van on Sun, 12/13/2009 - 13:37.That was the case with me too, maruutsu. I was in private school from grades one through nine and there were about twenty-five kids for class. Then, I went to public school for grades ten through twelve, and there were forty.
I think I must be the only person on the planet who prefers the larger class sizes
In my honors or AP classes,
Submitted by Tiffany on Sun, 12/13/2009 - 13:43.In my honors or AP classes, we never have much more than 15-20. In my regular courses, it's usually a big mix of grades and the teachers "control the masses" by means of book work and no actual attempts at teaching.
Oh yeah, APs always small.
Submitted by Van on Sun, 12/13/2009 - 13:49.Oh yeah, APs always small. My AP English class last year had nine people. My AP Chem class the year before had sixteen, and it was an eleven/twelve split full-year course (grade eleven material first semester, grade twelve second).
I just wish we had more
Submitted by Tiffany on Sun, 12/13/2009 - 14:05.I just wish we had more teachers and better class sizes.
And better behaved students for that matter.

Submitted by Rebecca on Tue, 12/15/2009 - 16:12.Tiffany: It really is a small world when someone actually knows where my town is! heh heh. And VSU is ok. The weather is really bad here, though! So humid! But pretty much all of Georgia is like that
Anyways, I never knew that public school classes were so big! The cap was 23 in my district.
But to go back on topic, I was talking about this case to someone yesterday, and I heard that they actually ended up firing the teacher, which seems a bit harsh to me. I mean, obviously she did catch them eventually, and kids always misbehave when there are substitutes.
Ick, I haven't heard that
Submitted by Tiffany on Tue, 12/15/2009 - 19:24.Ick, I haven't heard that they fired the teacher.
And my district being one of the better districts in the area, a lot of our overcrowding comes from people with fake addresses trying to get into our system. Yeah, we're just that great. But we're fixing that, and quite a few people have come from the office teary-eyed because their next semester will be at the school that they were zoned to attend. And we have a new high school opening next year. That's a good 160 students gone right off the bat.
And the world isn't that small! It's only small that we just happen to love the same website and actually have the intellect to read it. Must be something in that Warner Robins water!
