I was wondering how you took the pictures for your character bios/family trees?

Sadly my own Sims are beginning to lose their pictures in SimPE. They're fine in-game, but in SimPE their thumbnail shows up as Mr. Potato Head, and in their character file there is no image node at all. Scary!
That IS scary. I think

Wait, what? That can happen?
Submitted by Van on Wed, 03/17/2010 - 12:32.Wait, what? That can happen? I'm aware of the Mr. Potato Head of which you speak, but I've only seen it because my little brother once tried to change the Grim Reaper's appearance with the Temporal Adjuster, and that effectively deleted the Grim Reaper, the Therapist, and the Pollination Technicians from my game with only their Potato-Headed character files as remains, but obviously this isn't a huge problem for me these days. I would definitely be worried if it started happening to my actual Sims, though. Do you have any theories as to the cause of this?
It's a relief to hear that they work in-game, though. I was under the impression that Potato Head = corrupt/broken file.
EDIT: Okay, after a quick search, I found this. Is it mainly Sims that haven't shown up in the story in quite some time? Or, if it's people that have been appearing frequently, maybe you just need to go onto the lot, refresh the thumbnails, and save?
Apparently the only part of
Submitted by Lothere on Wed, 03/17/2010 - 12:38.Apparently the only part of the file that is corrupt is the facial thumbnail image node. If I open the character file, it appears fine, and I can edit things like the stretch factor, but the entry for the image simply isn't there.
I have no idea what's causing it. It happens to some Sims but not others. It has happened to Sims whose appearance I have recently modified with InSim, but other Sims whom I have just as recently modified are fine. And they have a thumbnail image in-game -- just not in SimPE.
It's not from installing an EP, because I last did that back in April and this phenomenon only started happening in the last couple months. And my version of SimPE is precisely that old.
If I ever figure out the common factor I'll let everyone know.
I figure it's either a problematic mod, or there is some piece of makeup or something that I have begun using semi-frequently, and which is simply borking any attempts by the game to save a valid thumbnail.
I guess I need to use science here and attempt to narrow things down a bit, but so far I have been too lazy, since it doesn't seem to interfere with anything.
EDIT: Heheh OK you edited while I was typing. I wonder what this "new feature" is? I do have AL so that sounds like what's happening. Since I do not "play" and I don't know at what point in the game the thumbnails disappear, it may be that I have been insulated from this effect for the most part, until I started noticing it recently.
Off-hand I don't remember who has been affected. If the game does something goofy like erasing the thumbnails of random Sims who aren't currently on the lot, then since I have some popular characters who haven't been seen in like a year, our time, it's not surprising that I would see gradual attrition of not-recently-used characters' thumbnails. I guess my science-doing should involve finding a character who is affected, bringing him onto a lot and changing his appearance, saving, exiting, and see what happens. *sigh*
At least I'm glad to think that there is a possibility of getting thumbnails back. I know it has happened to important characters, like the Old Man or someone along those lines, so I would be bummed if I had to get his bio pictures in another way.

Submitted by Van on Wed, 03/17/2010 - 12:53.Hmmm... do you have the Loading Screen pose box? I think there's an option for posing the Sim according to their thumbnail. I'm pretty sure there's also some backgrounds in solid colors available for download somewhere. That could be an option if the saving theory doesn't work.
If it came down to that, I
Submitted by Lothere on Wed, 03/17/2010 - 13:00.If it came down to that, I think I would just get some black wallpaper and pose the Sims with more creativity than the stock 5 poses or so. That might actually be kinda fun... Sigefrith flailing his arms... the Old Man making a fish face with his eyes crossed... Egelric looking surly... Connie looking shy.... NOOOOOO!

I don't think it has anything to do with AL, but rather with the version of SimPE that supports it. I don't have AL but I have that version, and it's happened to me too. I think I even commented it here a while ago.

AL changed the way the game
Submitted by Quinctia on Wed, 03/17/2010 - 21:52.AL changed the way the game does thumbnails to where they are often regenerating. I don't know, that may have something to do with what's going on.
The only fix I know of is here, mainly because I don't actually play with anything past Seasons in my own game.
It looks like there's stuff in there to patch AL, AL with the patch, and M&G. However, you have to play with a no-CD cracked exe file in order to use this, since it's a bit more involved than a mod. (You can find cracked exe's at GameCopyWorld. I never play with discs in the optical drive, personally.)
Wow, thanks for that info!
Submitted by Lothere on Thu, 03/18/2010 - 04:28.Wow, thanks for that info! I may try that. It's a good excuse to install a no-CD exe. I haven't bothered yet, even though I know it's no good for either CD or drive for me to leave the disc in there 24/7.
In fact, it happens with AL.
Submitted by François on Fri, 03/19/2010 - 01:53.In fact, it happens with AL. The faces of the sims change during the game according to their mood. I observed that the Mr. Potatoe head comes when a sim grow up and don't use the mirror to change his/her appearance. But if I go in game, make the sim use the mirror, and go back to SimPe, the problem is solved and this is another sim who wears Mr. Potatoe head. In fact, the Mr. Potatoe head change from sim to sim each time I load SimPe. I don't think it's a bug, I think it's due to the feature of AL that makes faces change during the game.
