The first two answers aren't
Submitted by Van on Sat, 12/03/2011 - 19:54.The first two answers aren't really working for me. They're too black-and-white.
I would like for them to stay together... but at this point, I think it's going to take a colossal, earth-shattering epiphany on Alred's part, plus a huge follow-up gesture. Plus an admission that he's got some fault in it too, because it seems that as far as most of the characters are concerned, it's all Hetty's fault, which is just not true at all.
Maybe a Matilda-like explosion on the part of one of the girls would at least turn him in the right direction? They've both got to be pretty near their breaking points some days. I imagine Margaret would be the obvious choice, but it might have more of a knock-the-socks-off effect from Gwynn, just because Alred would never expect it from her. Plus maybe getting away from that household is giving her a bit of a new perspective.
Oooooh... or maybe Hetty could attempt to write a poem just to get her feelings outside of her, and then Alred could find it?
Not that I think either of those would solve the problem outright, obviously
But if they were a couple I knew in real life as opposed to a fictional couple--especially a historical fictional couple--I would probably want them to just break up already.
I agree with Van. Having
Submitted by Ann on Sun, 12/04/2011 - 06:04.I agree with Van. Having Alred and Hetty stay together would be what I'd prefer, but only if they can work out their problems and be happy with each other (again).
A Matildaesque explosion from Gwynn or Maggie sounds like it might work to get Alred to see what's wrong here. And just maybe Yware will be able to do or say something as well.
I haven't lost hope for Alred and Hetty yet. They have a lot of work to do on their relationship, but I believe they can do it!
I voted "stay together" but

Alred seems to be starting to desire it. Remember how he felt when he broke into the birthing chamber and won a smile from her. But he's such a histrionic mess of self-loathing and undying grudges. He needs therapy to sort that out and get him in a position where he can be open with her and trust her again.
Meanwhile Hetty may simply be falling out of love with him by this time. Hetty needs to feel useful, but she also needs to feel loved.
However lots of things are about to happen to shake them up. Egelric is home and Yware is (unbeknownst to them) on his way. Irene will be coming too.
And Gwynn is growing up and losing some of her sillier notions. If she stood up to her father and told him a few home truths, there's a chance he might actually listen. It would be an attack from inside his defenses, as it were.
