Elven noble illegetimacy and lower caste concubines.

Hello everyone
As we all know Vash and Iylaine are expecting a child in the fall. This child will of course cause a lot of complications for its parents. Where will he or she be raised? Will he or she be eligible to be Vash's heir since he/she is illegitimate.
Then this brings the question of how noble illegitimate offspring are treated. Elves like Sarall (killed Sela's cousins Mash and Surr with Ris) Uncle Mustache, Sorin, Tashnu and many others have noble illegitimate children.
Interesting, Vash's younger half- brother Iyis who is Sikhon just lost his mother Nammea whom he was living with along with his half brother His. I wonder if Sorin acknowledged his Sikhon son. And if Vash is aware if Iyis' existence.
Vash's child will be Khorron and very noble. If the child is a boy then his chances of becoming a Khor could be high. If his illegitimate birth isn't a problem.
While going through some of the Khorron family trees I noticed that the elf Sarall is married to a Kisor Salhoma who is Ksalton and the daughter of Dru. I am surprised he was allowed to marry her while Tashnu is getting flack for living with his concubine Nina. i do wonder how Salhoma and Nina are treated in their households since they are married/partnered with noble elves.
To be quite honest I don't see the negative in Vash having a concubine of his own. IMO I think he might do well with one. Sadly Iylaine will be a constant in his life now that she is carrying his child.

Submitted by Lothere on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 16:39.The biological father of those low-caste kids doesn't seem to have any special role in their life, nor does the identity of their father seem to have an effect on their status. At least not when it comes to the relationship between castes. Maybe among the lower castes, the name of your father (if you know it) is something you are either proud or ashamed of. Maybe there is a hierarchy based around that. I don't know.
Other than Lena we haven't gotten to know any of the lower caste elves living among the nobles.
The usual comparison to the pre-Civil War American south doesn't quite apply, because there's no assumption that the children of slaves were fathered by other slaves. Everyone knows all those kids have noble fathers. I think the only way that could work in such a small population and in such close quarters would be if everyone tacitly agreed to pretend it wasn't happening. The only way the noble ladies and children would stand for it is if there is NO special treatment for the lower caste based on paternity. And if there is NO special favoritism shown to lower-caste mistresses, which is why everyone is so upset about Nush and Nina.
Now, wherever Dru is concerned, there always seem to be exceptions. Two of his illegitimate daughters even live with him. Though, granted, they are noble. And even then Ris is afraid his father will molest them.
Look, Salhoma's mother was 11 years old when she had her baby, and five days later she was dead. Dru has the Midas touch, except everything he touches turns to nightmare and horror. And Salhoma's "noble" husband's hobby consists of shooting unarmed boys in the face. You just can't draw conclusions from certain characters. You won't like what you see.
As for Vash and Iylaine, you're getting well ahead of the story.

Submitted by Van on Thu, 03/22/2012 - 22:31.I'd be pretty surprised if that happened, actually. Not only is Vash a sentimental personality by nature, but Iylaine raped him--and judging by Vash's POV just before and his conversation with Paul afterwards, Vash isn't romanticizing it and trying to trick himself into thinking it was consensual. I doubt he'll ever be able to look Iylaine in the eye again, if he can even be in the same room as her.
As for the baby... well, obviously the baby has no fault in this, and I think Vash is smart enough to realize that. But again, he's a sentimental personality and--more importantly--a rape victim. Whether he blamed the kid or not, could he really look at him/her and not remember the conception? Plus the whole Vashmalaina drama that preceded it?
To me, the most plausible scenario at this point is that Malcolm divorces Iylaine and takes the kids, and then she moves back in with Egelric and has Vash's baby while Vash keeps his distance, maybe never even knowing the kid exists until Paul or Osh informs him otherwise.
Of course, Jenny has surprised me before

Submitted by Devin on Fri, 03/23/2012 - 06:13.I'd feel bad for Iylaine if Malcolm took the kids away. Maybe their situation could be like Leofric and Leila. Leila has visitation rights.
This is ahead of the story. But for now Iylaine is knee deep in shit.
I read this comment before
Submitted by Dominiquex on Mon, 05/21/2012 - 17:08.I read this comment before but it's still incredibly interesting to me. I have no idea what should happen with Iylaine and Malcolm - I think Iylaine has acted irresponsibly for the entirety of her relationship, and Malcolm is finally having his first big realization that it's happening. I'd like to see them work it out, but I don't know if that's even possible. But divorce wasn't really an option in these times, and they were married by the church and that's the culture that both of them have been raised in. Leila was never Leofric's wife as far as the church was concerned. So maybe they'll just live separately and both see the children. I would hate for either of them to be apart from the children, those two babies are going to need both their parents, and both parents have previously been very invested in the concept of being parents. There might be hope there at least.
But as far as Iylaine and Vash's coming child... I imagine that even though the child is illegitimate from the human perspective, there's at least a possibility that it might not be from the kirron. The kirron have never had the possibility of divorce before, ever. Vash is in uncharted territory. It would probably come down to the Shalla's decision. Maybe with Vash's feelings taken into account. I mean, they did baptize Iylaine's actually (from their perspective) illegitimate half-breed son. So I imagine they'd want to baptize her full-breed child with her destined husband, even if said husband (their future Kir) had managed to unbind them prior to its conception. The kirron are also facing a succession crisis, it would seem. Which, given their worldview, is also somewhat of a cultural apocalypse. Vash is such a caring person, and has been alone for so long, that I imagine that if he had a chance to see Iylaine's baby, he might fall in love with it despite its conception. I could see that being a very healing relationship for him. And given the baby's very troubled position in human society (illegitimate child of adultery, Iylaine and Malcolm's marriage crumbling, all the anti-elvish sentiment Iylaine had to face) it might be better off in the kirron one. I guess I'm just having fun thinking ahead of the story as well, but it would be really interesting to see Vash finally have someone and be able to be the father he always wished he had.
Anyway, look forward to this story's development.
I vote for Malcom here.
Submitted by Chicklet on Mon, 05/21/2012 - 23:42.I vote for Malcom here. Between the 3 of them he has been the most "in the relationship". Whatever scenario would make him happiest, I vote for that. Probably working things out with his wife, and she is undeniably wanting to be back in it.
That is kind of big because I long wanted Iylaine and Vash to be together. If Malcolm dies, I hope they can work stuff out. I know she raped him, but Vash seemed to think she knew not what she did. I would rather Malcolm not die.
I'm also hopeful that Iylaine doesn't end up losing them both. It would cause her endless torment. Looking back on her life, she has had undue amounts of rejection and love witheld from her.

Submitted by Chammalia on Thu, 09/20/2012 - 12:27.I really wanted for Vash and Iylaine to be together. I believe she has been in love with him the whole time, but denying it because of her whole history and her angriness with the elves. Because of that she turned to her friend Malcom. I really felt like Iylaine had realized her feelings for Vash in the raping post – still I feel sorry for Malcom. It’s kind of like he is the victim because Iylaine was both denying her feelings and in need of someone that could love her.
Of course this whole situation is inconvenient. I don’t know if Iylaine can make Malcom believe the child is his .. and even that won’t do much for neither of them.
