Submitted by Sonia on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 12:03.As terrible as this may sound, and I know his past history for being evil, but I voted 'Hottie' for Imin.
There's just something about that 'bad guy' attitude that appeals to me. Besides, it's those eyes (again).
What is it about Sim eyes? I just can't get enough of them.

Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 21:10.You know, you could have picked "Both"! No matter how phwoar-worthy he may or may not be, there's no denying he's a perv.

Submitted by Sonia on Tue, 02/26/2008 - 04:34.Nah, I'm sticking with 'hottie'.
I'm just weird that way.
I guess it's because I don't have much time for being 'bad' myself, so I escape into the world of Lothere.
Besides, you can't have a good story without a real baddie or two. Adds to the 'excitement' and charm.
I voted perv, his looks
Submitted by Taryn on Tue, 02/26/2008 - 05:04.I voted perv, his looks don't appeal to me. But it could be just because of what he's done, I don't like guys that would treat women that way. Keep it in your pants Imin

Submitted by Lothere on Tue, 02/26/2008 - 05:58.The funny thing is, his looks don't appeal to me either. And didn't I declare that the shortness nullifies the sexiness somewhere, on the topic of Alred? Imin's appeal is something other than his looks, I think. More like the way he looks at you. But sadly enough, I'm afraid the badness does contribute.
I do like the way he stands up to Lar though, which no one else seems to do. He's a self-confident little dude.

Yes, I did peek at his pics.
It took a lot of restraint, I can tell you, but I simply couldn't resist THAT temptation you put before me.
And yes. Even with that sneering pic of him in there, there's still that PHWOAR!!!! factor there.
I am such a baaad girl (snigger)

I voted 'hottie' - for me it's both the looks, and that whole bad boy attitude.
I'm a sucker for his hair (the bangs! my goth!) and those eyes.
And I've always thought bad boys were hotties.
So yes, I voted hottie!

Submitted by Lothere on Tue, 02/26/2008 - 08:03.I use that hair in its different lengths a lot, because good long hair for males is hard to find, but I really, really love that hair on Imin. He uses it to hide his scars, but it seems a shame... there is something about his eyes that ought to be so frank and appealing (am I right, Sonia?), and the hair hanging in front of them spoils that. Spoils it in a sexy way of course, but it still seems like it's not the look Imin ought to have had. In a kinder world, where he would not have had to fight, where he would not have been scarred, we would have had a very different Imin I think. So the hair is a part of his persona far more than it is on, say, Magog, who is wearing a black version at the moment.
Meh. He doesn't really do it

Submitted by Lothere on Tue, 02/26/2008 - 12:45.Seeing the appeal is half the battle, Cassie! There's hope for you yet.
I will have to do a Lar-based poll some other day, but perhaps with a different question. Like, "Lar: Kill him painfully, kill him but make it quick, or make out with him?"
In spite of all he's done, I don't think Lar is a perv. He's more of a business-like rapist, whereas Imin really gets into it.
I can see the whole baddie
Submitted by Cearbhaill on Thu, 02/28/2008 - 21:14.I can see the whole baddie appeal... but he just doesn't do it for me. Couple the shortness with the looks (though I'll admit he has a pretty smokin' bod) and I just can't quite find him hot.
I voted Imin as a perv. I
Submitted by Karen on Fri, 03/07/2008 - 07:01.I voted Imin as a perv. I can't get over the whole rapist thing.
I started thinking about the elves, and which ones I like, and I realized that I don't care for most of them. There are the rapist/murdering elves who I dislike because I generally dislike rapists and murderers; bitchy elves (like Lasrua and Miria) who have reasons for their bitchiness, but I still don't appreciate them; and normal elves who get along with humans, but screw up relationships that I want to happen/continue (Sela messing up Aengus/Maire, Osh messing up Flann/Araphel, Vash messing with Iylaine/Malcolm, etc.). Obviously, this is just because of my personal preferences, not because of their personalities.
I realize that I must sound completely negative which I don't intend; I LOVE having elves in the story. They make it so much more interesting because of the drama that they create. I guess I just identify more with the humans, which is totally lame and close-minded of me. (Is it still close-minded if I recognize it as such???).
Be as negative as you like.
Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 03/07/2008 - 07:32.Be as negative as you like. In a constructive way of course. Otherwise how can I know if something in the story is not working for people?
I hadn't ever considered the fact that there has so often been an elf involved in our ugly love triangles. Osh, Vash, and Lena, as you said... even Sela coming between Egelric and Iylaine. Also Lasrua may be causing a hitch in Malcolm's life, though it's hard to say what the other point of the triangle may be. Perhaps Maire herself.
There are some elves that haven't been too annoying yet... Shosudin comes to mind. But they all have blood on their hands, without exception I think, among the males anyway. But you can replace "rapists and murderers" with "soldiers in an ugly war". They aren't common criminals. Most of them would not be "rapists or murders" in a happier civilization.
I'm not trying to excuse it... or maybe I am just a little, because it would be hard to feel affection for a real, honest-to-God, pyschopath monster, which I insist Lar and most of the others are not. (Lar's father is one of the exceptions, but more on that later.)
But I have been reading a bit lately about how the potential for evil exists in all of us -- the legendary Stanford prison experiment being the textbook example of it. And I've been thinking about how some of the factors apply here with these elves... the dehumanization of the other, the ability to abdicate responsibility to authority, conformity to the group, etc. So probably I will be exploring that even more in the future.
I'm not saying that to tell you you're wrong not to find Imin attractive, or not to find the elves appealing, of course. It's just something to think about.
And as for identifying more with the humans... that's perfectly normal. That's the point, in fact. Having the "bad guys" be elves makes the topics a little more palatable to us, I think. Science fiction and fantasy authors figured that out long ago. It's allegory for humanity, of course, but it slips past the horror filters in our brains.

Submitted by Karen on Sat, 03/08/2008 - 09:26.Believe me, I struggle with disliking some of them! You do such a good job with showing nicer sides of Lar that I have to remind myself to hate him!
And I do see your point that it's war, not murder, so I can excuse most of the killing---but not the rape!
I do give you a LOT of credit, though, because normally I can't stand reading about rape, but you do it in such a way that breaks my heart for the characters but does not literally make me sick to my stomach and lead me to stop reading. I'm so hooked on your story and the characters that I don't imagine there's much you could do to get me to stop reading it!
I voted hottie. It's not so
Submitted by Seiza on Tue, 03/18/2008 - 20:00.I voted hottie.
It's not so much the looks (though that is a GREAT body he's got on him), but the non-pervy side of his personality. I see Imin as a cockroach-- and that's more of a compliment than it appears. He seems like he'd survive anything, even more than Lar, but that comes at the price of something in him being eaten away too. And, of course, Imin has gotten more exposure than Llen, and he's quickly standing out as a potential faction leader (or at least serious trouble-maker).
I really like the significance you put in his hair, Lothere-- from the beginning what threw me off was the hair on Imin. It just never seemed to "fit" him the way Paul's new hair completely fits him (I'm starting to think of it as "Paul's hair" even).
I still want to rip that goatee(?) off him, though.
Funnily enough, I like all of them as characters, but the elves I've really come to support (in the "OMG please please be okay/happy/alive you better not kill him Lothere! *sends petitions*" way) are Lar (...) and Kiv post-banishment. It could be the long-term effects of the Legolas boom so many years ago.
Upon further reflection I
Submitted by Lothere on Tue, 03/18/2008 - 21:15.Upon further reflection I believe the color of Imin's hair is important to his character, too. He has really been dealt a tough hand in terms of looks -- not that he has been given ugly features, but that he has ended up with such an unlikely combination of striking features. His sweet eyes, his freckles and tan skin, his puny size, his babyish face, his scars, his unearthly white hair... I don't think any of those things fit him, and yet they are him. I think the weird white goatee is "him" too -- sorry.
In Imin there is a lovely combination of being defiantly ugly ("The ugly little troll with the scarred face—me!") and being extraordinarily vain. It takes a lot of work to keep such pale hair in such great quantities looking silvery and smooth, after all. There is a real parallel with Alred there.
Oh dear, I was about to go to bed, too. All it takes is dropping in a quarter and pressing the "Imin" button. Makes me want to get to the next elf chapter so I can catch up on my gratuitous pics of Imin's smirk and Lar's kissable profile... *checks outline...* Derrrrrr stupid humans.

Imin is disgusting, violent, and horrible and he kind of makes me want to throw up the fish I just ate when I saw his pictures. Besides he's got a little man's complex and I HATE guys with that. Imin defies definition,
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 04/07/2008 - 17:42.Imin defies definition, Devin. He is the mirror Alred, so you may always ponder that characterization.
I think he would have been a very different elf if life hadn't been so cruel to him. It has made him vicious and bitter... somewhat like Alred, in fact, once life really got its claws into him. But I love Imin as a character, there is so much going on in him. All of his old potential is still there, it has just been perverted.
Lately not much has been happening with him but we should see him once in the middle of December, and then he will start his scheming again.

The real question is how is Matilda doing, and I am beginning to fear that we won't find out until after her baby comes. So much other stuff going on.

Submitted by Devin on Mon, 04/07/2008 - 18:09.You think Imin would have wanted to see Matilda after he had his way with her?
I'm worried about her since you did say it's NKM.
I don't think he would have
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 04/07/2008 - 18:16.I don't think he would have cared to see her at all. I just thought he might have run across her in his travels, since she lives close to where he does. (Or she used to.) I have no idea what he would think to know he had a half-elf child on the way. Probably nothing good.
NKM was last month, Devin, so we only have the usual amount of angst planned for December. Cassie tells me this adds up to quite a lot, however, so it may be best to continue worrying.
What do you mean used to?

Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 17:03."Used to" because she is living with Ethelwyn and Mouse now, and they live all the way across the lake.
I don't know exactly what the future holds for Matilda, but I doubt I will simply kill her. That would be the most boring of all possible outcomes.

Unregistered users can post comments, but maybe I will turn that off, since I am getting really tired of deleting porn spam. My WordPress blog does a much better job of taking care of that for me.
A forum like "Imin: Perv or Hottie" is probably a likely target for that kind of link though.

On a different note and totally off topic.....
I was thinking about all the priests how they got their 'calling'.
Out of them all....
....Father Matthew in my mind's eye, is the more progressive of the priests.
In fact, I can envision him here in modern times, running around in his cassock, wearing sneakers and listening to music on his MP3 player.
He just reminds me of a 'rock star' type character.
