Random Silliness: The Great Lothere Casting Call!!
Submitted by Van on Sun, 12/07/2008 - 23:17.
Okay, this is only slightly insane, so bear with me here.
So I was reading over some of the old Sigefrith/Eadie chapters when my brother came in and asked if I wanted to watch Lord of the Rings with him. I said okay, and so we watched it, and all the while I kept thinking "Hmmm, Viggo Mortensen would be a good Sigefrith". Has that ever happened to anyone else?
So now I'm curious to know who people would cast if Lothere was ever made into a movie. Anyone care to play this little game?

Er ... Kristen Dunst as Ragnhild Haakonsdottor, for sure ! And maybe Catherine Deneuve as Eadgith Hingwar. But who should play Vash ? I think Liv Tiler would do a perfect Matilda Cild...

I do think we should youngify Angelina Jolie and get her to play Rua though, she is just exactly Rua. Mr. Lothere took one look at Rua and said she looks like Lara Croft, but I think that's what he had in mind.
I think that big guy who played the king in The Other Boleyn Girl would make a good Leofric.
Tom Cruise would have a hard time playing Vash at any age because Vash is so tall.
Catherine Deneuve would indeed make a good Lady Eadgith.
And that's all I got.

Okay, so I spent all morning
Submitted by Cassie on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 10:17.Okay, so I spent all morning thinking about this, and have got quite a list. After a time I began to really think about the actors and who could really pull off all facets of the characters... (I got really, really into this.) So some of them may not make complete sense if you're not familiar with their body of work. So here are my picks, in the order in which I thought of them:
1. Javier Bardem as Leofric. He's a bit young yet, but he can definitely pull him off. He's a solidly built guy with a growling voice and serious lips, very sensual, but definitely looks like he can pull out some chair-throwing and roaring.
2. Natalie Portman as Lili. Just dye her hair blonde and I think she'd make a terrific Lili. She's got the manic, girlish energy and definitely the sharp, sparkling wit (she's a multilingual Harvard grad, if you didn't know.) She's also teeny. Not quite curvy enough to be totally true to her (and, in my opinion, too Audrey Hepburn beautiful) but she could get the personality down pat. Reese Witherspoon could probably pull off a decent Lili too, but I like Natalie better so nyah.
3. Jason Segel as Eirik. The comic side of Eirik, anyway. I was thinking about a comic actor who was very tall and looked like he was always tripping over his own feet, and this guy instantly came to mind. I don't think he could pull off scary powerful Viking Eirik, though.
4. Ellen Page as Margaret. Margaret's a bit too young yet (Ellen Page is, I think, 20 or 21) but has Meggie's prettiness, coloring, short stature, and definitely the tomboyishness, stubbornness, and the apparent willingness to participate in a belching contest at any turn.
5. Liv Tyler as Sela. Someone (Francois?) suggested her for Matilda, but upon further reflection I think she'd make a better Sela. She has the gorgeousness, the coloring, the full lips, and that sort of aura of fearfulness and alienation that Sela did. Maybe not the wildness, though.
6. Tilda Swinton as Nimea. She may not be as lovely or quite young enough, but that extremely pale, eerie, immortal, otherworldly thing? I don't know of any actress who could pull that off better than Tilda Swinton.
7. Orlando Bloom as Ethelwyn. This one I'm not entirely sure about (for one thing, I'm not a big Orlando Bloom fan,) but I definitely think Wyn would need to be played by a pretty, rather prissy young actor and he was the best one that came to mind. Anyone have any ideas on that front?
8. Sherilyn Fenn as Matilda. This is the pick of which I'm proudest. Most of you probably don't know who she is if you haven't watched the TV show Twin Peaks (which you should, it's brilliant) but Sherilyn is gorgeous, tiny, curvacious, haughty of expression, and with fair skin and black hair. Her character on the show, Audrey Horne, is devious, meddlesome, sultry, sexy, more comfortable with men than women, and incredibly quick-witted. Sound like anyone we know?
9. Ed Westwick as Caedwulf. Another example of a TV actor whose character convinces me that they'd be good in the role. Ed Westwick's character on Gossip Girl (yes, I watch Gossip Girl, STFU,) Chuck Bass, is a rich, priveleged, smarmy-hot pretty boy with serious mother issues. Again, sound like anyone we know?
10. Claire Danes as Eadie. This is a big example of my loving an actor and really thinking that this would be a great role for them. Claire is a very quiet, emotive actress, and my favorite performances of hers is where she plays a quiet, awkward, yet soulful character (in My So-Called Life and Shopgirl,) so I think she'd do great with a character like Eadie.
My eleventh pick was Ed Norton for Lar, because he's so good at the whole angry tragic violent antihero thing, but I like JRM better for Lar. Well played.
*Pants* So that's all for now. I'm seriously stuck on ideas for our main guys, the Scotsmen, daughters-of-Flann, Vash, Iylaine, Sigrid, and the younguns (Connie, Gwynn, Cedric, Kraaia, etc.)
Man, this is fun.

I'm really stuck on the Scots. Where on earth are we going to find those noses? Not to mention that particular brand of PHWOAR that they possess.
Oh, and I've been obsessing over who would play Alred all day, too. Must be PERFECT, damn it!

First off I just have to
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 11:54.First off I just have to say: you guys are awesome. I LOVE YOU PEOPLE!
I am not sure about JRM for Lar. He does pass the "Do I want to make out with him?" test, but he seems a bit brooding for Lar. Lar is a tortured soul in his own way, but he's not brooding. JRM needs to tone down the brows and the pout a bit to be Lar. Actually if you could make that guy a little older and a little more haggard-lookng, I think he could make a good Aelfden. We need a good Aelfden too!
I think Orlando Bloom could play Sebastien if François has other committments.
I LOVE the idea of Claire Danes as Eadie.
And I am CLUELESS about the tribe of Scots, with their darkish skin and hooked noses. We might need to tap into the ethnic market here. They don't have to look like the cast of Braveheart; they're fairies, not Celts. Something Persian maybe?
Otherwise I wish I could comment on your choices, Cassie. I'm sure they're wonderful. *whimpers*
Oh and good luck with Alred. Cassie's Alred must be the perrrrrfect man.
My first thought for Alred

Lar... hmmm... I'm stumped. The best I can think of is Jared Padalecki from Supernatural, but then again I don't know too many actors.
Am I completely out of my mind to think Hugh Laurie would make a good Aelfden? There's something about the eyes...
Hey, you know who might make
Submitted by Van on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 16:19.Hey, you know who might make a good Egelric? Adrien Brody. Sure, he's kind of pale, but he has a significant amount of nose on his face.
I think Johnny Depp would
Submitted by Cassie on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 16:31.I think Johnny Depp would make an excellent Alred. If only we could find a way to shrink him.
Adrien Brody does have the nose, rather. And I like him very much. (Something about the nose makes me go all squishy inside, especially when accompanied by Adrien Brody's particular brand of PHWOAR.) I dunno if he has the right "monumental" quality that Egelric does. But he would make a VERY good grown-up Finn, at least looks-wise. We don't know what Finn will be like grown up yet, obviously, but...
Oh, and I don't know if it would fit, but since I love Aelfden and love Hugh Laurie, I'm perfectly willing to accept it. And have lots of faith in Hugh Laurie's acting skills. I think he could pull it off.

Hugh Laurie as Aelfden, just
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 16:38.Hugh Laurie as Aelfden, just needs to lose a few pounds or get a tapeworm or something:
I <3 Adrien Brody but he seems too frail to be Egelric. Egelric is a pretty solid dude. But FINN OMG YES! Living proof that big noses are sexy. Grown-up Finn:
We can shoot around Johnny Depp's height, folks, he has the black eyes and the "don't touch my daughter" expression to go with them:
You're right, Adrien Brody
Submitted by Van on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 16:38.You're right, Adrien Brody would make a better adult Finn than Egelric. I was also thinking that Alexis Bledel might be a good choice for an older Gwynn... it's so hard to think of actual teenage actors!
On a completely different note, maybe a younger Josh Holloway could pull off Kiv, particularly in the cave days.

Submitted by Cassie on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 16:44.I think that Johnny Depp as Alred might be too much happy for me to bear. Especially if he did Alred justice. Which I'm sure he would, even though it would be pretty damn hard for *anyone* to properly pull off Alred in my starry eyes.
*Squeals at the thought of Hugh Laurie as Aelfden* The more I think about that, the more it makes sense. OMGZ THE AWSUM.
Oh and that picture of Adrien Brody is so...oh, I love him. That big nose is definitely not just sexy for Sim-men.
Still stuck on Vash, though. I have no idea for that one.
This is way too much fun, you guys. I'm supposed to be doing wooooooork!

Plus he played a total psychotic killer in American Psycho (not that Lar is a psychotic killer, but it shows that he can do that if need be.) A very self-contained killer, though. From what I've heard, anyway. Haven't actually seen it...I don't mind movie violence at all but can't abide too much gore.
Van, you're really good at this. OMG this is addictive. (Looks like we've got another forum party starting up, too.)

Submitted by Nimue on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 17:31.After watching Tristan and Isolde again, recently, I have got to say that James Franco can pull off a couple Lotherian men. First one that came to mind was Ethelwyn, but that may be hard to do. There is someone else that I cannot put my finger on... hmmm. Maybe one of the younger boys when they grow up? I'll keep thinking about this. Now these thoughts will invade every movie I see. Oh, and the actress in the movie, though I forget her name, may make a good Hetty.

Hee, THE PROFILE. The profile is an important deciding factor for Lar, after all. And I didn't see Viggo as a potential Sigefrith (mostly because I always thought of Viggo as PHWOAR and Sigefrith as...well...not so much) until I saw that picture. I can definitely see it there.
I want to make a fake imdb page for this when all is said and done. Or at least imagine one in my head...

Submitted by Cassie on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 19:11.Yeah, I was writing out that actor/actress list in my art history class this morning, stopping my note-taking as different ones occurred to me. Made it much more fun.
I love Audrey Tatou. Not sure about her as Aia, though...can't decide. I think Katherine Heigl would make a decent Iylaine, though I'd prefer our Iylaine to have a more aristocratic look about her, whereas Heigl is more of just a "pretty girl." Good match on the mouth, though, and the temper.
I like Catherine Zeta-Jones for Matilda, too, even though she's not the pick I made. Happy to see someone who could work as a daughter-of-Flann, too.
Personally, I think Jude Law would make quite a good Ethelwyn. He has the prissiness down pat.
THIS IS GOING TO BE A BITCHIN MOVIE.
ETA: And Kate Winslet definitely needs to be *someone*. I love her, and she's so wonderfully British. I could see her as Matilda, actually, although she'd make an extremely fun Sophie, no doubt.

Submitted by Nimue on Tue, 12/09/2008 - 22:41.I told myself I would study but that is a work in progress. Instead I was thinking of how I missed watching and playing tennis...and then, I had yet another realization. May I present Ana Ivanovic for the role of Sigi. Sure, she doesn't act, but...but... alright. So I'll keep looking. But thought I would post this anyway.

Submitted by Verity on Sat, 12/20/2008 - 09:44.Guys guys guys!!! I'm back!!! Really back this time! I finished my halfway exam/presentation/gruelling hour of questions in front of an audience and passed with flying colours. So serious hurrah. Now I am a half-doc! Only two more years to go .
I have missed you all SO much! I am so excited to actually have some REAL holiday now where I can sim to my hearts content over Christmas! Hurrah!
And can I just say this is the most AWESOME thread idea ever. Sofie told me about it the other day so I have been thinking a lot lately about what actors would play our favourite characters and today I have been trawling through some sites looking for good actors. Sorry for coming so late to the game (and sorry Lothere for bypassing the site to come here and comment... I will be making my way back soon. I just couldn't wait!
You are right Lothere, Eric Bana would make an awesome Leofric. That man is as phwoar-worthy as the come. Just check out this pic:
And he's an aussie! Hurrah!
I am anti-Tom Cruise... Johnny Depp is a much better Alred
I loved everyone's ideas so far though... some of them were so spot on. I wanted to add a few of my own. There are quite a few :
1. My favourite choice of all is Daniel Day-Lewis for Egelric. He is getting a bit old now, but would still be great for Egelric now (and we can pretend he is young enough to play young Egelric). He has the nose, he has the anger and he has the presence. Here are a few pics to prove my point:
Check out pic 23 in "Egelric struggles with the serpent". Look familiar
2. Anne Hathaway for Britamund. I think she would play the tomboyish but sort of innocent and awkward role really well.
3. I am in love with the idea of Keaunu Reeves to play Young Sigefrith. I mean... they are both such clutzes. I don't think he is a fantastic actor but he does play a certain role perfectly (think Bill and Ted's excellent adventure) and I think he would be great as our bumbling knight.
If only we could get him to smile and not do his "serious" face.
4. Dakota Fanning as Kraaia. She is one of those irritating child actors that appears in every movie requiring a cute kid, but it seems she is growing up a bit now. And I think she has the right looks for kraaia (and is probably about the right age).
5. He is my least favourite actor ever (well actually he comes in just behind Nicholas Cage), but I think Daniel Craig would make a perfect Cenwulf. He looks right... big and beefy, stand silently in the background... doesn't have much variation in facial expressions
You want proof check out picture 14 of "Aelfden brings reinforcements"
6. I like Saffron Burrows for Maud. I think the actress who plays Maud she have a sought of surreal look about her and I find Saffron Burrows to have a rather interesting face. I think she can do bitchy quite well too.
7. I found a picture of this actress Alice Braga. I don't what her acting is like, but I think she would make a really good Flann. I think Genevieve Cortese would make a great Flann too but I think she would be better as the pretty girl Cat to Flann's boyish beauty. Alice Braga really has that look going.
8. I hadn't heard of her before, but apparently she was in Beowulf (which I haven't seen). But I think Alison Lohman could be Siggy, if she wore blue contact lenses. Her eyebrows are right and her lips are sort of full.
9. I have been looking for a good Mouse + Wynflaed combo and I think I might have found it. I really like this actress from the OC, Autumn Reeser (haven't watched it but she looks really cheeky in her pics) for Mouse:
Wynflaed has been a bit of a toss up for me between Jennifer Love-Hewitt and Winona Ryder. I think Winona wins because her angst levels are a lot higher. I think she can do sad better Jennifer and her body shape seems more Wyn than Jennifer's. Also I think Jennifer is horrible while Winona is cool
10. Last but not least... well not really. Emma Watson from Harry Potter as Margaret. But Ellen Page like Cassie suggested would be just as good I think. They look quite similar actually. Here's a pic:
But actually the best person to play Meggy would by my best friend's younger sister. I don't think she would like it if I put up a pic but seriously... those two are identical. It is really weird.
So I am done with my huge essay. Obviously there is also Colin Farrell to play Magog as Lothere mentioned earlier in this thread. Their eyebrows are identical. They also both exude sleaze so I think he would be perfect. But for the record I am not a big fan .
Alright, that's me done for the time... I'll let you know if I come up with anyone else.
Veriteeeeeeeeeeeeeee(y)!!!
Submitted by Lothere on Sat, 12/20/2008 - 10:23.Veriteeeeeeeeeeeeeee(y)!!! I was just about to post a *hug* on your blog just because we missed you. Much *confetti* and dancing bunnies in honor of your half-rock-doctorship
Also I hope you don't mind I took the liberty of editing your post to put pictures in instead of links. So much funner to read.
I heartily concur with your analysis of Eric Bana's likeness to Leofric. I think that's settled.
Wild crazy-man DDL in the 2nd picture looks rather Egelric-like, I admit. His nose needs just a bit more bump, but that's nothing compared to the Star-Wars-Bar-Scene level of plastic surgery that would be required to give that nose to Colin Farrell. I am still totally sold on Adrian Brody for Finn though... we could always rough him up and make him play young Egelric if necessary.
I like your... everyone, actually. I am not sure about Kraaia... even though that actress looks mischievous in a way that would inspire people to check their well water before drinking, Kraaia is supposed to be strikingly beautiful, when she's not frowning and pouting and slouching and glaring. That girl is just cute. I don't think you have read *quite* far enough to get Vash's impressions of her yet, but he seemed impressed.
That Mouse is PERFECT.
And did I mention, welcome back, and happy holiday-simming?
ETA: Eric Bana even has Leof's exact profile! Oh PHWOAR!

Gosh Eric Bana is phwoar. I mean seriously... those pecs. PHWOAR!!!!
Thank you for making them pics! I really wanted to do that but I didn't know if (a) it was possible and (b) how to do it if it was.
Yeah, DDL is missing the bump but at least he has a big honker which you don't see enough in hollywood. I thought Trent Reznor might make a good Egelric too with his faboulous nose and high angst factor.
I think you are right about Kraaia. She has the mischievous but she isn't especially beautiful or special-looking. I just thought she looked sort of right for the part. Maybe when she gets a bit older.
Hooray for holiday simming... I can actually start writing my story again!!! Wheee! *does holiday simming dance which involves kicking legs in the air and whirling arms in manic fashion*.
I know, tell me about it,
Submitted by Lothere on Sat, 12/20/2008 - 10:49.I know, tell me about it, there just aren't enough big-nosed men in the media.
Trent Reznor is an interesting choice, but isn't he about 3 feet tall? We need to find a shorty among the Scots for him to play. Diarmait maybe? Diarmait isn't very angsty though... just whiney.
Putting pictures in is a simple matter of putting the img tags, like so:

I am pretty sure ordinary users have the ability to do that...

Those picks were terrific, Verity! I'm still sold on Amanda Seyfried for older Kraaia, though. I never thought of DDL for Egelric (he's totally powerful/crazy enough) or Keanu for Young Sigefrith - those are great. Winona Ryder might be a teeny bit too old to play Wynflaed, but she definitely has that wide-eyed fragility that Wyn has.
Isn't this thread waaaaaay too much fun?

Submitted by Sofie on Mon, 12/22/2008 - 15:30.I love Emma Watson. Watching a rerun of a Harry Potter movie in the backgorund. I think she would make a good Synne too. If we straightened her hair. But her curly, wavy hair is beautiful, so maybe not.
