1. How many servants does Egelric have?
As a matter of fact I recently spent a morning putting together a spreadsheet to track Lotherian demographics. Version 1.0 says that there are 45 hardy souls currently living at Sceadwung-Clif, aside from characters we know. So... maybe 1/3 in the castle and the rest on the land? Though I would guess that some of the family members of farmers would have jobs in the castle. Probably a step up for a pig farmer's daughter to be a housekeeper in a castle. Ample guard-flirting opportunities, if nothing else.
Also, interestingly enough, currently residing at Sceadwung-Clif there are also a shoemaker, a scabbardmaker (WTF? surely they make something else besides scabbards all day...), a tiler (not Anna's father), and a roofer. Hmm!
2. Will we ever see any of his tenants?
Well if this story goes on forever, the probability approaches one. I do not currently have any plans to that end. You may have noticed I don't do much with the lower classes. I have that Historical Romance Writer addiction to dukes and earls and lords.

Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 12/19/2008 - 15:16.Uh, I'm sure the boys are curious about elves because they are elves. Plus I would suppose most 6-year-old boys would be curious about elves anyway, if they suspected there were any.
They (Wulf at least) have surely asked Finn about the elves, but Finn isn't talking. He probably got a speech from Osh and Paul or maybe Vash or Uncle Mustache or we don't know who... "You can stay with the men, but..."
Also I am not sure Finn would be all that eager to pal around with Wulf and Gils anyway. They're dog-elves after all, plus have the extra ooky factor that comes from them being his father's son and (apparently) Lar's son, respectively. And they're six! What kind of fourteen-year-old only child likes to hang out with six-year-olds?
Finn is warming up to his dad, but he isn't too keen on the rest of Egelric's family and "life" out at the castle. He mostly sticks to Paul's house and wherever he can be close to the other boys his age -- Sigefrith's castle, and Maire's house, and so on. In true teenager fashion he makes only the occasional short and grudging visit to his father's family, and spends the rest of his time hanging out with his friends.
I am not sure how he feels about Iylaine, though. He knows who Iylaine is, and I suspect he has some pretty strong feelings about her actually. He would probably like to get to know both her and Malcolm better, but I would imagine Iylaine being rather stand-offish -- unless she gets the idea that she can get to Vash through Finn? Hmm.
Their relationship will be touched on in an upcoming chapter so I will have to give it some more thought.

I believe Egelric would also flip out to, if he heard.

I would suppose they would
Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 12/21/2008 - 18:29.I would suppose they would go to live at Nothelm with Alred and Hetty, since that's where Iylaine spent a good part of her youth, and Baby-Flann is already there anyway at the moment. A few more mouths to feed wouldn't faze anybody there, and the people there are surely used to having elves around by now.
I can't see who else would take them. Iylaine and Malcolm would be the only other option, and they're both practically children themselves, and their house is small. And that's setting aside Iylaine's probable slight resentment towards their existence.
If you were thinking Aia, you're wrong.
Why not? Ok her house is
Submitted by Devin on Sun, 12/21/2008 - 18:32.Why not? Ok her house is small and doesen't have that much money but she is their mother's sister! If she marries well then they could live with her i think.
That's a big if!! Aia would
Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 12/21/2008 - 18:40.That's a big if!! Aia would probably love to do it, but she is still so far from fully joining the civilization of men. Egelric's friends and heirs and executors would never consent to letting her raise any of Egelric's children at this point.
As for the future, that has yet to be written, and you're getting way ahead of the story again.
Well your kind of dropping
Submitted by Devin on Sun, 12/21/2008 - 18:45.Well your kind of dropping hints of Egelric's demise so I am looking after the interests of Sela's children. And no offense to Hetty but any kin of Lili's raising Sela's children rubs me the wrong way. Alred and Hetty honestly would not be able to spend that much time with boys since they have their own children and problems with in their marriage.
Aw, geez, Devin, what's with
Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 12/21/2008 - 18:54.Aw, geez, Devin, what's with all the anti-Lili sentiment? She was the only mother they remember, and they miss her terribly. It isn't Lili's fault that Sela was killed. *pouts*
It's true that Alred & Hetty's family isn't quite a Norman Rockwell painting, but I don't think they're doing too badly by the kids they have. Their own plus Baby-Flann, and Connie, I suppose. It isn't like Alred and Hetty fight, they just aren't lovey-dovey any more. They do spend time with their kids... rather a lot compared to Sigefrith (and Cenwulf back in the day). I guess the only issue would be the way everyone is walking on eggshells around Alred after his suicide attempt, but compared to Egelric and his volcanic angst of the moment, that would probably seem like a holiday to anyone who has had to live with him. I would kick that man, but he would probably like it and ask me to do it again.

I know she didn't kill Sela
Submitted by Devin on Sun, 12/21/2008 - 19:16.I know she didn't kill Sela but I just can't help but resent her. I mean you killed Sela with out warning, there was no closure and there were many questions that were not answered. And then Lil swoops in and Sela is history. Its so unfair Lili had more time with Egelric and she got to raise Sela's children. And we saw so much of her, I don't even like Lili but I know a lot of things about her, Sela not that much. Aia can't reveal Sela's thoughts or fears and hopes; I wouldn't want her to she should be her own character.
I don't hate Lili and I didn't wish nor was I happy or relieved that she died. The way she got Egelric to marry her is a no no in my rule book and just ruined the character for me.

Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 12/21/2008 - 19:28.But none of that was Lili's fauuuult! *whines*
Well except for the sleeping with Egelric part, but who can blame her, really? Option One: Get shoved into a sack by Raedwald, carted off to Ireland where I must seduce someone or assassinate someone or otherwise be a tool in the twisted plots of that freckle-faced schemer. Option Two: Have sex with Egelric. No-brainer, really.
True that.

Yes sleeping with Egelric
Submitted by Devin on Mon, 12/22/2008 - 18:14.Yes sleeping with Egelric was the only option avaliable to Lili and if I was a woman and in her situation i probably would have done the same if there weren't any other better options.
I don't know why I resent her, none of what happened to Sela, is her fault but I still resent her. Just as how Iylaine resents Wulf and Gils' for their existence which is not their fault.

Some elven ladies die in
Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 01/02/2009 - 17:26.Some elven ladies die in childbirth, but not often among the khírrón. We've already seen the kind of things Shus can do with his "magic" or other abilities in terms of patching people back up, so there are probably lots of otherwise fatal complications that the elves could solve that way. And obviously they can handle things like excessive bleeding or childbed fever. None of the elves get sick from germs very often anyway.
It's not the same among the kisór since they don't have magic for the most part, but they're a bit hardier than human women. They do still die sometimes.
As for the kisór gentlemen... uh, you forgot a verb? I assume you're asking if they're allowed to have mates or kids... and you must mean the servants of the nobles, since the only thing the rebels are "allowed" to do is die.
So, if you look at all the guys that are there now, not one of them has kids. One way or another, they're prevented from having families.
Apparently not through castration, though -- once in a while one will escape, and if they can get into hiding, they have families. I don't know how often it happened, but there was at least Val who pulled it off.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention

Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 01/02/2009 - 17:57.Os is a virgin, as was hinted in "Matilda has no idea", so even if he got into some "interesting adventures" since that chapter was written (which I doubt) it seems quite unlikely that it would have been with Aia.
He's just keeping his farm, mostly. Like his father, he is not a sociable person at all -- he just likes to stay home and stay quiet. He visits Wynflaed and Sigefrith fairly often (when they were still at home), and Mouse and Wyn sometimes, but he doesn't have many friends otherwise, and doesn't get out much except on business.
It's about time I start thinking about Os's own big romance. Wynflaed had hers, Mouse had hers...

People might talk if Os went
Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 01/02/2009 - 18:43.People might talk if Os went to see Aia, but probably not to say what you're thinking. If Os is going, everybody's going.
All I know about Aia's taste in men is that she likes them short, bald, and in diapers. It is definitely too early to say what sort of grown man she would find attractive, or whether she would even be attracted to a human man at all. Or to any sort of males... maybe she's into women?
We will have to wait to see how she reacts to various male characters in the future. She has already surprised me before, so there's no use in speculating.

Malcolm didn't combine the
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 01/12/2009 - 05:37.Malcolm didn't combine the house and the shed, he just knocked the shed down to make room. Egelric wouldn't even have needed to, since there was quite a bit of yard between his front door and his shed. (And it might have involved cutting down trees, and you know how Egelric treasured the pines that were there.)
Lothere do you think Egelric
Submitted by Devin on Mon, 01/26/2009 - 10:45.Lothere do you think Egelric loved his father a little bit more than his mother? It seems like his father was the more gentle parent and his mother was the disciplinarian one.
It's not really fair to
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 01/26/2009 - 11:01.It's not really fair to Egelric to talk about which one he loved more. His father died when he was a little boy, and all he has are a few happy nostalgic memories, and perhaps no sense at all of the flaws that his father must have had.
My sense is that his father was somewhat lazy and dreamy, and it was his mother who really kept their household together and made sure there was always food on the table and so forth, even if only by nagging Gils into getting off his behind and getting to work. But Egelric just remembers the nagging. It's easy to love a ghost, as we've said on numerous occasions with regard to numerous characters.
His relationship with his mother was not great. She was physically and verbally abusive and beat him with various objects until he was big enough to scare her. In return he was a very bad and rebellious kid, and she didn't know what to do with him, especially after his grandfather died. They fought all the time. But he was loyal to her in his way. He lived with her till he married.
And at several times in the past, when he has thought about his failings as a father, he seemed to come to an understanding of his mother, since his "parenting style" resembles hers in some ways, and his temperament definitely does. I think he does forgive her. And he's old enough and wise enough to realize that his father could not have been the perfect daddy he remembered.
Egelric's mother would have
Submitted by Devin on Mon, 01/26/2009 - 11:48.Egelric's mother would have been a very interesting character if she was alive. Egelric doesen't seem as strict as his mother was. Of course he has spanked Wulf and Gils when they were naughty but he his affectionate with them and the rest of his children. I don't remember him spanking Iylaine either. I think he's a very good father.
Old Maire is one of those
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 01/26/2009 - 12:01.Old Maire is one of those characters who inhabits a story despite not actually being in it. She has influenced Egelric so much. She operates on the story from beyond the grave at times.
Egelric doesn't hit his kids the way his mom used to slap his face and beat him with the churn staff, but he can certainly roar, and his great failing is his sarcasm. He says things that hurt on occasion, but you have to be older than 3 or 4 to really "get them". Wulf and Gils are getting old enough to understand, I think, when he lashes out with the sarcasm.
Actually, no, his greatest failing as a father is and always has been his tendency to withdraw into himself and basically neglect his kids. When he abandons them, he always abandons them to someone safe, but he still abandons them sometimes. Iylaine shows the scars of this even today, and I bet Wulf and Gils and maybe Jehanne will too, now that Egelric is falling back into the same patterns since Lili's death. (The boys don't remember pre-Lili days.) Egelric is pretty good with his kids when he's around, but overall I would say he's one of the shittier fathers of Lothere. No offense to those who think otherwise.

Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 01/26/2009 - 12:52.I don't think we can say how he was with the boys after Sela's death. We hardly saw him that year. He seemed to withdraw from everybody at that time. The different was that he didn't run around. And that may be because Alred was wise enough or distracted enough to mostly leave Egelric alone for a change.
Egelric himself talked about himself as a father in "Lili's eyes cry":

Actually I don't have any Lar + Imin chapters planned for the near future. We have an Imin chapter coming up in a day or two, and a naked Lar chapter later.
I still have to decorate Aia's cottage, so I will try to get some pictures of her there with her baby when I do. Don't know when that will be though. I have a ton of building to do for some of the next chapters.

We have already seen that elves suffer when their mothers (or spouses) are killed violently. Iylaine did, and Vash has only hinted at it, but he certainly did. The key is "violently" of course. That hasn't been explicitly defined either.
Really? Lena was leaking
Submitted by PenelopetheFox on Mon, 02/09/2009 - 15:02.Really? Lena was leaking fire? I didn't get that impression at all. I thought that she had just summoned the fire to defend herself.
Yeah, she wasn't "leaking"
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 02/09/2009 - 15:05.Yeah, she wasn't "leaking" anything... Kraaia sort of came away with the impression that the spurts of flame were somewhat tied to the strokes with the knife, but I hope I didn't stress that too much. Maybe Devin just extrapolated from that?
We've never seen anything like the elves spilling fire or water or anything when they've been stabbed or hurt. Their blood's red like anyone's.
Oh yeah I forgot Lena has
Submitted by Devin on Mon, 02/09/2009 - 15:14.Oh yeah I forgot Lena has magic. She was using her magic to defend herself. Are you avoiding the wulf question?
Yeah, I said I wasn't going
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 02/09/2009 - 15:17.Yeah, I said I wasn't going to answer any questions about what happened that night, and Wulf doesn't remember, so...
All I can do is offer the generic information that elves seem to suffer when their mothers die violently, for some definition of "elf" and for some definition of "violently".
I just realized that Aia is
Submitted by Devin on Thu, 02/12/2009 - 15:57.I just realized that Aia is the first elf to live among the peasants and working class people. While Paul, Osh, Lasrua, Lena, Iylaine, and Lady Sela live and are affiliated with the upper class. I'm going to enjoy seeing Aia's distinctions of the classes of the men.
Good point, Devin. That
Submitted by Van on Thu, 02/12/2009 - 16:44.Good point, Devin. That should certainly be interesting. Unfortunately for Aia, though, the peasants don't seem to like elves too much...
Yeahhhhh... and the peasants
Submitted by Lothere on Thu, 02/12/2009 - 17:00.Yeahhhhh... and the peasants she lives near happen to be among the rowdiest and least enlightened of the lot. The wife-killing father of her baby being a good example, and the child-abandoner / borderline child-molester that was Tidraed's wife's 2nd man is another. Life on the frontier of justice!
As long as Aia keeps to
Submitted by Devin on Thu, 02/12/2009 - 17:08.As long as Aia keeps to herself and does not converse with the wrong people I think she will be fine. Up-Eard seems like a rough neighorhood .
Meryt why would Seven be
Submitted by Devin on Fri, 02/13/2009 - 11:10.Meryt why would Seven be returned to the men? If he does who would he live with?
Who said anything about
Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 02/13/2009 - 11:17.Who said anything about Seven being returned to the men? He doesn't even speak English. He doesn't know anything besides elven life.
Wasn't that implied in Lar's
Submitted by Devin on Fri, 02/13/2009 - 11:28.Wasn't that implied in Lar's heart to heart with seven? When he gets older he might be returned but why?
It was only implied insofar
Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 02/13/2009 - 11:38.It was only implied insofar as Lar believes the elves might all be killed someday, but Seven might be spared because he isn't an elf. Which might be wishful thinking, actually. Especially if Seven gets old enough to fight alongside the others -- he would probably fight to the death along with his adoptive people.
But if Seven ever did outlive them all, he might go to live with the men just because there wouldn't be anywhere else for him to go. But then again, maybe not. Maybe he would go live alone, or just kill himself or something.
Certainly nobody is preparing him to be returned to the men, if that's what you're getting at. Lar doesn't know what Dre originally had planned, but he has no intention of sending him away. And I doubt Lar will let him go so easily if "Dre" ever comes to collect him, either.
Stay tuned though, because we should be seeing Seven and considering his situation in life fairly soon.
Do you think if Lili was
Submitted by Devin on Fri, 02/13/2009 - 15:28.Do you think if Lili was alive some of the events occuring right now would not have happened?
It just seems like all the past events was leading up to this event if Lili or even if Sela was alive Egelric would not have had an affair with Marie sending her on mental tailspin leading her to attack Lena.
What has Egelric done with Lili and Sela's belongings did he burn them like Elfleda's?
It's impossible to say what
Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 02/13/2009 - 15:31.It's impossible to say what would have happened of course... don't forget that if Lili hadn't died, Alred wouldn't have done what he did either. SO MUCH would have been different.
Obviously Egelric wouldn't have touched Maire in a million years. But Cearball probably would have been all the more attracted to her if he hadn't been all creeped out by Egelric's presence, so he might have slept with her anyway, assuming she was willing. (Which she might have been, though I sort of think not. She's too proud.)
Whether that would have led Maire to do what she did, that's anybody's guess.
Egelric hasn't done anything with Lili's things yet.
Sela's things... I don't know. She didn't have much in the way of "things". He probably saved some mementos for the boys, but not much else.
