1. How many servants does Egelric have?
As a matter of fact I recently spent a morning putting together a spreadsheet to track Lotherian demographics. Version 1.0 says that there are 45 hardy souls currently living at Sceadwung-Clif, aside from characters we know. So... maybe 1/3 in the castle and the rest on the land? Though I would guess that some of the family members of farmers would have jobs in the castle. Probably a step up for a pig farmer's daughter to be a housekeeper in a castle. Ample guard-flirting opportunities, if nothing else.
Also, interestingly enough, currently residing at Sceadwung-Clif there are also a shoemaker, a scabbardmaker (WTF? surely they make something else besides scabbards all day...), a tiler (not Anna's father), and a roofer. Hmm!
2. Will we ever see any of his tenants?
Well if this story goes on forever, the probability approaches one. I do not currently have any plans to that end. You may have noticed I don't do much with the lower classes. I have that Historical Romance Writer addiction to dukes and earls and lords.

Sela didn't have any attraction to Alred, I don't think. I would imagine it took some time for her even to understand that he was a poet, since it's a difficult word to express if two people don't speak the same language. Poetry, in itself, doesn't translate well -- to the point that neither might recognize the other was speaking poetry at all. However, there are some similarities between Anglo-Saxon poetry and elven poetry (really, more than between Anglo-Saxon poetry and later English rhyming poetry) so she probably she figured out what he was doing if he ever started reciting poetry to her.

Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 02/15/2009 - 16:56.*raises hand* I'm really not all that attracted to Alred. I could probably think of twenty Lotherian men (and elves) I find more attractive in a sexual sense. It would be pretty awesome to be his Matilda, but even then...
I don't know, he's a little too florid of speech and oiled of hair to please me. He has an incredible depth of feeling, but sometimes that's the only thing keeping him on the right side of the smarmy line. His increasing age is not helping him on that account either... he could yet turn into a dirty old man type, the butt of all the young maidens' jokes. (Connie is already a little weirded out by him.)
Of course Imin skirts the smarmy line too, falling just on the wrong side in my calculations. Nevertheless, now that I think about it, Imin turns me on a lot more than Alred ever has. Maybe I need the smarminess to make up for the effeminacy? *strikes thoughtful pose*

Submitted by Lothere on Tue, 02/17/2009 - 12:48.I don't have any plans for that yet. He's spending the winter in Italy so he won't even make it to the Holy Land until the spring or summer. He'll probably spend the season touring that area, and then come back, spend another winter in Italy, and then head home when the passes through the Alps are clear the following year. So I would say not till spring/summer 1087 at the earliest.
However he's accompanying a real-life person on the journey -- the Count of Flanders -- who didn't come home until 1091. So I would say late summer/early fall of 1091, at the latest.
Since Leofric's niece
Submitted by Devin on Tue, 02/17/2009 - 12:55.Since Leofric's niece Gunnora is a widow and motherless does she live with her sister? Wasn't it against the law at the time for noble women to live on their own?
Gunnora does live with her
Submitted by Lothere on Tue, 02/17/2009 - 13:05.Gunnora does live with her sister. She and her sister and her husband currently live with the man who married Lady Alix way back when. They're all living in the family house at Halsfield, where Leofric was born.
It is not illegal for a woman to live alone, but no one makes it very easy for her. I believe Anglo-Saxon women had more legal rights than Norman women did, however, and Gunnora is effectively a Norman now. She was at least raised in a Norman household speaking French. I am not sure whether Norman women were allowed to own property. (Anglo-Saxon women were, with some restrictions.)
In any case Gunnora doesn't have anything in the way of property or freedom nowadays, and if she wants to escape from her sister's household, her only other options are entering a convent (if her family will let her) or getting married again.

Submitted by Devin on Tue, 02/17/2009 - 13:10.Do they have any type of contact with Leofric?
They don't have any contact
Submitted by Lothere on Tue, 02/17/2009 - 13:19.They don't have any contact at all. Remember back in "Lady Eadgith gets an English girl", Lady Eadgith was horrified that Baldwin and Freya had gone to visit the family. (At the time Baldwin's mother was still alive.) Baldwin lied about where they were going to live, so as far as anyone in the valley knows, no one back in Halsfield knows where the boys are living nowadays.
However Leof and his nephews do have contact with the ruling family of Flanders (Britmar is with the Count right now, and our dear blotchy-faced Ogive is the Count's daughter) and so do Alix's daughters, so there is certainly the possibility that everyone knows where everyone else is, but no one is ungentlemanly enough to make use of the knowledge.

I'm sure they will eventually include dozens of chapters, I just don't plan that far ahead. For example on the 27th I only have one entry on my outline, but that one is going to expand into several intense chapters.
I know of some interesting plot lines that are coming up, but I don't know when they will happen. Probably not till after the new year.
Overall though the rest of this year seems likely to be rather full of drama in the elf world and the human world both. Maybe by now the thing that would shock you more would be if 1085 went out peacefully.

A lot of the fates that
Submitted by Lothere on Sat, 02/28/2009 - 15:47.A lot of the fates that could befall Egelric would necessarily affect Egelric's family.
Just about anything could happen to him now. If he actually gets convicted of conspiring with Maire to kill Lena, he could lose everything, starting with his head.
Even if he "only" raped her, bad things could happen to him. His lands do not belong to him -- they are granted him by the Duke as his fee for knighthood, so if Alred wants to dispossess him, he can do that too. Not to mention Aengus and Cearball could both be after private justice after what he did (or what Cearball believes he did, namely tell Maire to accuse him).
I know things are quite intertwined, but we mustn't forget there are two crimes here -- Lena's murder & the arson of Paul's house, and Maire's rape and battery. Even if it can be proven that Egelric had nothing to do with the former, he actually is guilty of the latter -- and I don't know how far the "But she wanted it" excuse is going to get him.
And even if it is proven Egelric had nothing directly to do with the murder & arson, if it's decided that Maire has lost her mind, it could be concluded that Egelric was responsible for that, making him indirectly responsible for the murder. (She was quite sane when Aengus left, after all.) It is probably in Aengus's best interests to try this tack since otherwise he would have to accept that the love of his life is a cold-blooded killer.
Anyway, enough speculation! I should be writing a chapter now.

Submitted by Lothere on Sat, 02/28/2009 - 16:03.The creepy eye shadow! That's another one up there with the green robe Devin.
I don't think Maire's a cold-blooded killer, even if she was kind of calm there when we saw her. I think she's a hot-blooded killer.
And as for Aengus, I don't know, but it seems to me that anyone presented with an excuse for believing that his beloved wife is not truly a murder but a victim herself, he would be all over that. And that's why Egelric had better stay the hell away from Aengus once Aengus gets his feet under him again.
And Cearball is just the kind of guy who goes off half-cocked anyway.

She's twice ruined, though: first because she's illegitimate and second because she had three children with a man who never married her. If she had been considered of a high station in spite of the 1st problem, Godwine might would have married her, but he had bigger plans, which he finally realized when he married a daughter of Sweyn of Denmark. Devin you are coming up with
Submitted by Lothere on Sat, 03/14/2009 - 15:28.Devin you are coming up with some real stumpers lately.
I would have to write more chapters with both of them before I know much about their personalities. But I do have a Dara POV chapter in the works, and from what I'm imagining so far (and what we've seen of her so far in "Madra learns all she can" and "Vash regrets") she seems pretty awesome. Sweet and loving, yet clever and a wee bit radical. I don't think too many Shus fans will be disappointed in his wife. (Other than the fact that he has a wife.)
Nina, I have no idea. We only got a glimpse of her once.
(Embarrassing Lothere trivia: in "Vash confides", that's actually Lasrua, with blonde hair. At the time I didn't really think we would ever see Nina or Lasrua in the story. But looking at that picture now I can totally see Lasrua in it. I made another Sim for Nina later.)
I am not sure what's up with their relationship anyway. I am too lazy to go look it up exactly what quotes make me think so, but in some of my recent rereading of Tasnhu-related chapters, his love for her -- if he's in love at all -- seems to be of fairly recent vintage. Even he himself seemed to have a "just about sex" thing going with her -- "sex and companionship and surrounding myself with the trappings of marriage to make my miserable slogging towards death a little more agreeable," as Osh said. For all we know she's more sex slave than secret wife.
Anyway, how far can we get with a "who's nicer" question? This is not Kitten War! Quick -- Who's nicer -- Sela or Aia?
*steps away as smoke starts coming out of Devin's ears*

SO if Egelric isn't killed his reputation is ruined do you think he will stay in the valley or move to Scotland with or without the kids? Would Egelric's children be better off with him out of the picture?
Benedict will surely stay
Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 03/15/2009 - 06:12.Benedict will surely stay with Aengus. Even if Benedict knows Cat and Paul better now, Aengus is his father and he ought to raise him. Anyway Cat and Paul may end up staying with Aengus anyway, at least until they build another house or something.
There's really no point in speculating about what Egelric would do or what will happen to him, Devin. Well, you can, but since I already know a few things that are going to happen, there's no point in me speculating.

Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 03/20/2009 - 13:51.Didn't we ever create you a Random Tiffany Question thread? *shuffles papers*
The laítón are "noble" too. For that matter I suppose it is the translation of the English word "noble" into elven. If you are khórrón you are also noble, so no sweat there.
Khórrón literally means "the highest of the high" so maybe with the first elf who was khórrón it was just an equivalent word to "king"? And then in later years it became a sort of caste.
In any case, given how that caste is passed on, it is an easy way to tell who is in the direct male line back to Lír. Only the sons of sons of sons, etc., of Lír, plus the daughters of the same (such as Madra and Lasrua), who are themselves unable to pass it on.
All the "khirron" can trace
Submitted by Tiffany on Fri, 03/20/2009 - 13:58.All the "khirron" can trace their lineage, but what about the kisors?
Well, as I just said in
Submitted by Lothere on Fri, 03/20/2009 - 14:08.Well, as I just said in another comment the khírrón themselves might not literally be able to trace their ancestry back that far.
Certainly the kisór cannot trace their families back more than a few generations -- no more than we humans can. Their culture in particular has gone through something of a cataclysm lately, and they don't know how to write (if they ever did), so they're just hanging on to shreds of oral history.
It is difficult now to guess where the "original four" came from -- were they elves of another race? from somewhere else? Or were they just four "ordinary" kisór elves who set themselves up as leaders over the others, and figured out how to get magic, and their descendants have been ruling ever since?
Nowadays they believe they are a different and superior race, of course. And it may be telling that their "mythologies" are stubbornly different on a few important points -- such as the fact that both races call the Bright Lady their mother and the Dark Lady their "aunt" -- and both races think the other has it backwards.
But why does Osh's story
Submitted by Tiffany on Fri, 03/20/2009 - 14:15.But why does Osh's story only involve two of the original four? Doesn't the other couple matter?
Nimea has long ears. Did the original four have long ears? Is it some evolutionary thing? Is there really more than one race of elf?

Devin, that bedroom is long gone. It was made of wood, remember. That part of the castle was rebuilt in stone.
Here's a picture of where it was located, superimposed on the current castle. (Second floor.)
The blue part is the old room, which was divided by a wall down the middle at some point early on.
The green part is the old open walkway on the wall, where we had such classic chapters as "Alred opens the door" and "Matilda and Alred stand beneath the moon".
Lothere are Leila and Conrad

Yes I would say they're
Submitted by Lothere on Sat, 03/21/2009 - 17:20.Yes I would say they're quite close, Devin. I think the only chapter where we saw some Conrad-Leila interaction was in "Leila pronounces a happy phrase" but I always imagined them close. They're close enough that if Conrad had a question about the craziness of girls or wanted some advice about the same, he would be comfortable asking Leila. Not to the point that he would admit kissing Margaret.... but I have the feeling Leila knows there's something up there anyway.

Is there a character(s) in Lothere that you hate Meryt?
Ummm I cannot think of any.
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 03/23/2009 - 17:38.Ummm I cannot think of any. I would have a hard time writing about a character I hated. The characters that you and other readers might hate are some of the characters that I love the most, because there's so much depth to them. (Same with the characters you guys love -- the Alreds and the Sigis of the world.)
If anything my "most hated" characters -- which is to say the ones I like the least -- are the boring, neglected characters like the young Earl Baldwin or most of Theobald's family. Fortunately all it takes for them is a good chapter or two and I love them too.
In summary they are all my special little snowflakes.

Meryt I think you've mentioned before that your characters either talk or suddenly inspire you to write a chapter about them. But what happens to them when they die? They're gone completely from your head?
They don't "talk to me" in
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 03/23/2009 - 19:34.They don't "talk to me" in that sense... it's more like I get to watch them interacting with each other in some hypothetical future situation, and if it seems like it could go somewhere, I plan a chapter around it.
Some really pivotal chapters -- like Sigrid breaking Eirik out of jail for instance, or Alred fighting Leofric -- I rehearse over and over in my mind for weeks or months, often to the detriment of what I'm supposed to be writing at this moment. Right now this is happening to me with some of the soon-upcoming chapters featuring Aed, Eadred & Finn, Magog, and of course Egelric's fate, plus some crazy-distant stuff like what Yware is going to be doing in APRIL for heaven's sake. (Yware! )
Probably most of my chapters I make up as I'm writing them, but it's still just watching the characters act and interact, and writing it down.
So since my involvement is limited to watching what's happening or soon to happen in Lothere, necessarily dead characters don't ever come into play. In truth, once they're dead, I don't think much about them at all. They have no more to contribute to the story, so they're really gone from my head.
The only exception that comes to mind is Matilda. Every once in a while I like to imagine past situations with Matilda and Alred. I wish we had seen more of their courtship. I try to make up for it in my own mind. Call it backstory! Maybe someday Alred will tell his children (or grandchildren ) about those scenes.

Meryt are you going to put up baby Wendle's picture when he's a toddler? Does he grow up to be a looker?
Why is Vash's nephew El who is Laiton being raised in the temple with his mother instead with his father like Dru's daughters? Its also interesting how the boy's mother has her own household.
I have yet to install SimPE
Submitted by Lothere on Sat, 03/28/2009 - 14:40.I have yet to install SimPE on my new computer, Devin, but I'll try to remember to get a picture. He's kind of average when he grows up. I just noticed I don't have a picture of Ralf yet either! What the heck!
I don't know about El. It's a rare enough situation that it's probably handled case-by-case anyway. I've already said that Dru's relationship with his daughters may be somewhat unusual. (Not in a sexual way -- I mean just the fact that he wants them in his house.)
Also, we haven't seen anything about the Temple at all, but the concept of "household" may not really apply. It's probably more like Lasura has a sleeping room which she shares with her two children. Aside from the nobles, who have their own apartments, the elves in the temple and serving class live mostly communally.
I'm more interested to know why this Ru fellow has his own room. Maybe because he's 16 and sexually mature? And since he has water nature, and the lady in charge of the temple has fire? Hmmm....

But isn't Lasima Dru's mistress?
If she were, wouldn't they
Submitted by Lothere on Sat, 03/28/2009 - 14:50.If she were, wouldn't they have more kids by now?
Aside from that I reeeeeally prefer not to speculate about Dru's sex life. Someday we may get to meet the daughters or their mother or some other members of the family, and then we might know more. All we know for now is that Lasima got pregnant at 12, had two kids by Dru, and then never had any more, and seemed to get stuck in the temple despite her advancing age.

True they would have more kids by now. But it seems so forbidden that she would have an affair with a Sikhon boy she's 30 and he's 16.
