Vash has a nephew El who is Laiton but lives with his mother in the Temple. Is his situation/future similar to that of Dru's laiton daughters?

As for El, didn't I talk about him before? I'm always afraid of contradicting myself... even if I'm perfectly within my rights to do so.

I suppose he will grow up and get married and have an ordinary elven life someday. I don't think he will have a special role as Sorin's grandson. Dru's girls will probably be better off in some respects, since he has been a daddy to them. Whereas I don't think El was even ever supposed to happen. In any case he is not currently betrothed to anyone, as many or all of the truly noble elves are.

I don't think I hinted that. If they were actually having an affair I doubt they would have simply put the boy in a separate room. Only that they might have put him in a separate room to avoid any appearance or potential of that.

El's presence in the temple is most likely due to his illegitimacy. He doesn't have a nuclear family to grow up in. But I don't know that it will "taint him" when it comes time for him to marry. I'm sure someone like Lasrua would turn up her nose at him, but she's khírrón.

*cries* Can we go back to asking questions about people who have not been dead for 10 years and who are in their right mind, involving situations that stand a reasonable chance of actually occurring in the reasonably near future or might conceivably have happened in a not-too-distant alternative past? Such as: "What if Cubby develops a preference for men, what would Magog think about that?" (And what would Cedric think about that? *snicker*)

Sorry but I don't think Cubby and anyone would make a "good couple". This is 1085. Nobody and I mean nobody is going to be supportive of that. It may even be considered a crime, depending on the kingdom and the king. It would be an interesting storyline, and I will surely do something along those lines one of these days (not necessarily about Cubby -- he's only 12, so it's not at all evident yet that he's gay) but I guarantee it will be heart-rending. No happy endings on those horizons.

Now that's a scary thought. Hopefully Maud doesn't live on too much in too many of her children.

I would assume Vash was. I don't know how much elves like Sela are aware of "magic" -- it's not even a part of their cultural tradition. And at this point Wulf himself isn't aware of any magic he may or may not have. He only knows how to make his brother pee his pants and throw up, and generally just have some influence on moving watery things around.

But regardless, Gils has a lot more magic than Wulf. And I expect that his magic -- and he as a character -- will have a bigger role to play in this story than Wulf ever will. (Especially since Wulf's face will probably only get more painful to look at as time goes on. ) At the present time (and I admit, it is too early to say) I don't have any big plans for any of Egelric's kids besides Finn and Gils. (And of course Iylaine, who is already a MAIN character.)

I probably will fix up Wulf a little if he comes out looking frankly inhuman. (I think I already did, actually.) But I won't make him handsome. Some kids are just homely. Finn got all the pretty there was to be had in that family. Little Finnie Gets a Phwoar!

I think Gils is already having an unhappy life, and this disappearance of his foster-father is not going to help matters. He might just think that maybe his real dad can't possibly be such a fuck-up and want to go off to meet him. I mean, he TOTALLY HAS TO. What an interesting storyline that would make. Mr. "When I spit on the ground, do I call that my son?"... meet your son!

Fortunately I have other plans for Lar for at least the next half-year, so I suppose Ethelwyn and/or Egelric are going to manage to keep an eye on Gils at least till then.

Eh. I don't think Lar is at the top of Egelric's hit list right now. Egelric himself probably is. At the moment, it would take a lot to get Egelric to even sit up and take notice of the existence of Lar.

And we don't really know whether Egelric could or would kill like that. He said at one point that he had "learned to kill on a battlefield" but specifically that it wasn't the same thing as killing (assassinating) a particular person. He "killed" Druze the first time when he freaked out with a sword in his hand, and afterwards him or Midra a few times, already sort of knowing they couldn't really be killed. But I don't think he has ever killed a living humanoid in cold blood (or even the heat of the moment, outside of war). Correct me if I'm wrong.

I just wonder what Egelric would do if presented with an actual opportunity to kill Lar nowadays. It wouldn't change the past. Would he do it?

Anyway, I have a hard time imagining such an opportunity. Lar could crush Egelric's lungs from across a room, if not do worse. Lar's a killer by trade. *incidentally misses Lar*

He doesn't necessarily go that far. He doesn't need to -- he can just stop the air from leaving your lungs, and you suffocate. But "crush your lungs so flat the juice will leak out your nose" makes a better threat.

Sela can't be an aunt -- she's dead!

Llen will probably be more protective if it's a boy, because if he doesn't protect his boy, his boy will get killed in no time. Plus they are really really desperate for boys. Llen doesn't know how much longer he has to live, and the next oldest elf with water nature is still a child.

I guess that depends on your definition of "being an aunt" or "being a grandmother"... Since they're dead, that kind of takes all the fun out of it, for me. Especially in the case of an aunt... it's not like the child would carry on Sela's genes or anything. (Besides, Matilda is sort-of alive... she's at least aware of the baby, right? )

I am sure Aia realizes the danger her baby would be in if it's a boy. All her life she has seen boys taken away -- either spirited away by the rebels or taken away to be killed by the nobles. I'm just not sure what she's going to do about that.

Meryt by the summer of 1079 Egelric started to grow his hair and stoped wearing his peasant clothing. Would you say by that time, Egelric was starting to change in his mind and no longer thought of himself as simply Egelric Wodehead but a Squire and eventually a knight?

But by conforming to society it fed into his ego a bit. The way he treated Sela showed that he was a bit ashamed of her. He didn't present Sela to all of his friends and their spouses and announce that this is my new wife like how Leofric did with Leila even though Eadgith was alive and had returned to the valley and in his life.
The person who put up this border between these two worlds was Egelric himself in my opinion.

I'm not saying that she had to attend all of the social functions that he did; but by sepearating these two worlds Egelric involuntarily isolated Sela. She was so moved from society that in the end she did have a somewhat lonely existence.

What makes you think that Sela WANTED any of that? She didn't want to go live in that house -- why do you think she would want to attend dinners at Nothelm and audiences at the castle? Sela probably was a little lonely, but it wasn't human company and culture she was craving.

I think you're being hard on Egelric. He got himself into a rather impossible relationship -- both he and Sela knew that it wouldn't be easy. They both knew it from the beginning. Neither was dreaming of the day when Sela would put on a fancy dress and be presented at Court, you may be sure of that.

As for the situation with Iylaine... Vash could not have unbound Egelric and Sela -- I thought that was obvious. If he could have done that, he would have unbound himself and Iylaine long ago -- he wouldn't have had to go to Nimea.

On the contrary, I think it was made rather clear that the "or else" Vash meant when he told Egelric never to let Sela near Iylaine was that she would be killed, or at the very least taken away forever.

And yes, I think he would have done it. If not personally, he would have allowed or even ordered it to be done. When he saved Sela he was doing Egelric a huge favor -- and getting himself in huge trouble -- as it was. Above all else the one thing Vash would not tolerate was such a creature getting near his precious Iylaine.

He is indeed an inscrutable man. That's why we love him.

Everything Vash felt as a result of that was about Egelric. He is very fond of Egelric, and he was very sorry to see Egelric hurt like that. He buried Sela the way he did to honor Egelric, and perhaps to make amends somewhat for the way she had been treated in life.

But as I've said before, Vash isn't having second thoughts about the elven caste system. He still sees Sela and even Lena as "subhuman" (or "subelf" if you prefer). If there is going to be a revolution of that nature in elven society, it won't come from Vash. It seems more likely that it would come from a MLK Jr. or Mandela-like-figure on the other side. The khírrón would have little to gain from such a revolution after all.

I recently said "unlikely", and I'm not a gambling woman, so I can't give you any better odds than that. I haven't written an Aengus chapter in so long, I don't know what all he is thinking. Knowing Aengus he is probably in some sort of "someone else is going to decide this for me" denial. He is apparently drinking his griefs away with his father, which is not good.

If he took Maire back (assuming she was sane enough to do so), I doubt he would stay in Lothere though. I would imagine they would do like they did when Maire's pregnancy was discovered: take off and go to a place where no one knew their ugly secret. (Remember it took some time for most Lotherians, never having met Magog's wife, to realize that Maire was not married to Aengus. Sigefrith and young Malcolm tried to keep that hush-hush.)

As for your second question, I think fathers must have some sort of bond with their children, because Osh was able to feel Rua's anguish that time she tried to set herself on fire. (He thought she was drowning, but that was because she was coming "face to direful face" with Eithne's vash-nature babies.)

However I haven't figured out all the modalities of that, and whether it's even true for fathers of all natures besides air. The important thing, though, is that it happens because the father is bound to the mother, so some of the father's life must pass into the baby as well. But since Aengus was never bound to Lena, that wouldn't affect Benedict at all. Nor Gils if Lar were to die.

I think Benedict is still numb and traumatized. I would imagine he is mostly kept away from Aengus's kids, in part because of the state he is in, and in part because that would be hard on the girls too. "Here's this half-brother you hardly knew you had but who ruined your parents' marriage, and oh by the way Mommy isn't coming back."

In that house it has been, as Connie recently said, a miserable Christmas.

Ete already seems like a real handful. Aengus saw bruises on Marie's arms, and the first thing he thought was that Ete had done it.

Oh boy. I don't think the girls well atleast Ete will be fans of Penedict anytime soon. A part of me is kind of hoping that Aengus will take Maire back so that he could leave the valley and leave Penedict behind with Cat and Paul. But I hope he doesen't.

I just find it unrealistic if Maire went back to her normal life after what she did. Aengus would risk
ostracization from all of his friends and probably end up moving from the valley. I think what is best for the story and for everyone is for Maire to be hanged until her neck is broken or she lives a life of poverty locked up in a nunnery.
