1. How many servants does Egelric have?
As a matter of fact I recently spent a morning putting together a spreadsheet to track Lotherian demographics. Version 1.0 says that there are 45 hardy souls currently living at Sceadwung-Clif, aside from characters we know. So... maybe 1/3 in the castle and the rest on the land? Though I would guess that some of the family members of farmers would have jobs in the castle. Probably a step up for a pig farmer's daughter to be a housekeeper in a castle. Ample guard-flirting opportunities, if nothing else.
Also, interestingly enough, currently residing at Sceadwung-Clif there are also a shoemaker, a scabbardmaker (WTF? surely they make something else besides scabbards all day...), a tiler (not Anna's father), and a roofer. Hmm!
2. Will we ever see any of his tenants?
Well if this story goes on forever, the probability approaches one. I do not currently have any plans to that end. You may have noticed I don't do much with the lower classes. I have that Historical Romance Writer addiction to dukes and earls and lords.

Submitted by Lothere on Thu, 06/04/2009 - 04:35.I think it's too late for Aia to be somewhat normal.
Out of those three, if I had to choose for her, I would choose Ralf. Ralf would be much more capable than Os of defending her against the world. Saeward too, but he is rather odd himself.
But I'm really much more interested in Aia + Llen. And anyway, I really do believe that Aia has no desire to have a man (or male elf) around. She has certainly not grown up expecting it. She clearly does not see the advantage of it now. To her mind having Llen spend the night was like shutting up a wild animal in her house from nightfall to dawn. The first thing she did was get him drunk to subdue him.

By the time of her murder did she fully understand English? Like if Egelric probably told her that he was becoming a knight did she understand him? I wonder how she felt about Egelric becoming a knight and if she was starting to see signs of Egelric becoming full of himself.

Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 06/07/2009 - 10:09.I doubt he talked much about that -- he never cared about that or wanted that. Alred and Sigefrith had to practically drag him kicking and screaming into it. And even if he did, it seems like a hard concept to explain.
I also don't think Egelric was getting "full of himself" at that period, except insofar as he has always been rather full of himself and always had a chip on his shoulder. For me, the point where he really turned the corner was after he married Lili, and after Alred smacked him a few times (literally one time and figuratively several), and he really truly realized that he was part of this world that he had always thought of as being above him, and it was not inherently "superior" to his old life, and the people in it were no better than he. Once he figured that out, and lost his natural awe of these noble people, he really let himself go.

If they were girls that is. If they were boys and were allowed to live, then their lives would be somewhat odd, but I will save that for later chapters.

Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 06/22/2009 - 13:28.As for Vash, he has a pretty big apartment on two levels, about twice the size of what Shus and Dara have. He also has a rooftop.
I don't see how he could hide anybody in it though. He certainly doesn't do the housecleaning himself. He does seem like the sort of guy who would occasionally lock his door and tell everyone to leave him alone for weeks at a time (he did when he thought Paul died) but even so, after a while of nobody taking out his laundry or dirty dishes, that would seem suspicious.
Sorin could probably get away with it, just because he's so squirrelly and locked up alone all the time anyway. But that's just one more reason why Vash has to be available.
Oooh a forbidden love for Sorin! (That sound you hear is Devin's matchmaking wheels beginning to turn.)

Sorin doesn't have a sex
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 06/22/2009 - 13:41.Sorin doesn't have a sex life any more. He hasn't since his wife died. Have I said otherwise elsewhere? Osh is quite a rebel for doing what he's doing, and Tashnu's habits are considered beyond the pale.
The official word is that elves who were brutally bereaved don't even WANT to have sex any more. How the bereaved elves themselves feel about that is not so clear, but even though Osh definitely feels love and attraction for his new wife, he is still disgusted by Nush and his sleeping around (and sleeping NOT around).
I doubt Vash thinks much about any of that where his father is concerned. Really, his father has enough problems to keep Vash's mind fully occupied.

Submitted by Lothere on Tue, 06/23/2009 - 03:54.It is normal, though at least in Sorin's case I wouldn't call them affairs so much. More like one-night stands.
Nearly all of them do it... some with more relish than others. Uncle Mustache for example seems to have made it his life's work. But when presented with an opportunity nearly all of them will do it, whether out of liking to, or the undeniable effects of testosterone, or merely to fit in. But these are supposed to be flings with servants and slaves, nothing more.
Vash, Paul, and Shus really set themselves apart with their little virginity pledge or whatever they cooked up. I guess the idea was that Vash was already married and only wanted his wife, but he couldn't have her. So to keep him company the other guys decided they would abstain. Some of the other younger guys may have made the same decision, but I haven't paid much attention to that yet.

I don't know if he will be able to handle being a single father. I do feel a little sorry for him, he's lost the two women he loved.
He has nurses and servants
Submitted by Lothere on Tue, 06/23/2009 - 12:24.He has nurses and servants and things... and he is a good daddy. He is probably more cuddly and goofy and affectionate with his kids than Maire ever was. And he never really had a mother himself. (Colin never dreamt of remarrying.) I don't think he will have problems being a single father.
Being a single man might be more difficult for him. He's been carrying around a terrible loneliness for months now. He missed his wife while she was still there, and even if he can't bear to take her back -- which I wouldn't rule out -- he's going to be missing her still.
There's a big hole punched out of poor Aengus right now, and I don't know how he's going to deal with that. He's not going to be able to fix it by taking up with some miscellaneous other woman -- legally or otherwise -- and he's not going to be be able to just ignore it into nonexistence either. If Aengus doesn't come up with another great love, he's going to be walking around with a wounded heart until he dies.

Submitted by Lothere on Tue, 06/23/2009 - 12:43.There are plenty of other women available Devin. In fact, if Maire dies, Aengus's biggest risk is probably that someone is going to strong-arm him into another marriage. I can imagine his father doing it, and I can certainly imagine Sigefrith doing it, provided he found someone strategically advantageous who would nevertheless put up with the slight taint of scandal. A penniless yet well-connected widow would do nicely.
I agree it will be tough on the kids though. Especially considering that Maire herself grew up in a family where people were whispering that her mother killed her first husband to be with her father. AND WE KNOW HOW THAT TURNED OUT.

That's a tough question to
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 06/29/2009 - 06:36.That's a tough question to answer then. On the one hand their civilization seems sort of doomed. But on the other hand, it's their civilization. They ought to grow up in it, and they ought to get a chance at defending it.
I would also argue that it is not all fun and games growing up an elf among the men. Iylaine's childhood was miserable. And as we just saw, to this day there are plenty of men who do not like the elves. Easily the majority. The farther you get from the close neighborhood of Nothelm Keep and from Egelric's castle, the less elf-fans you will find.
As I said in the comments recently, when things are going OK there's not too much grumbling about elves, but if you look at the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle you will see that pretty soon things will stop going OK. I would not like to be Wulf and Gils or any other elf child at that time. They may very well get lynched, as almost happened to Iylaine on several occasions.
I am looking forward to some elf-human conflict really, because it feels like elf-human relations have been too easy lately... and worse, that the men are somehow seen as authoritative and untouchable, as if an elf has only to flee to the men and they're safe and in the clear. We are lacking a lot of tension that should be there, and I attribute it to my laziness as a writer and my past infatuation with Paul and his family.
If I had been as "realistic" with Aia as I've been with poor Egelric lately, she would probably already have been chased out of town by a lot of men with torches and pitchforks, if not killed by the khírrón. The next mysterious death in the neighborhood and I expect her lease will run out.
I think Paul and Osh may be OK since they're so well-integrated into the nobility (Osh is less than 24 hours away from knighthood and Paul has saved many lives) but I can see Malcolm being forced to move his household to a safer place than tucked way back in the woods, and all bets are off for Egelric's half-elf boys since Egelric has such a reputation for iniquity on his own account.

Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 07/26/2009 - 06:34.I have NO IDEA. Livestock I guess. We know Os must have at least a few head of cattle since Mouse told Ethelwyn they had a bull, and Mouse had to let the goats out to pasture in one chapter.
But otherwise... do you want me to guess which was most valuable at the end of the 11th century in northwestern England--wheat, barley, or rye? I'm sure that the thing that earned them the most money in a given year was the crop that produced the most, given the weather, the insects, the funguses, etc., and unless you were a fool you planted a few different things to play it safe. Anyway, most farmers didn't plant with a goal of what would earn them the most: they planted to feed their families, so they planted as many of the different things their family would want to eat (and drink, in the case of barley) as they could. Sometimes they starved, and other times, if they had enough left over, they traded a few sacks of flour to the shoemaker for a pair of shoes. They didn't handle money often.
Os manages "a farm", though -- he's not just "a farmer" such as Egelric was at the beginning. Os is more of a small-scale landowner. He has employees. He would have a few cows, a couple horses, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, etc.; a big vegetable plot, maybe a few fruit trees, and of course several fields planted in different crops. Rather self-sufficient--practically everything Os eats most likely comes off the farm.
Poor Os is one of the best catches in the valley, in terms of what the common girls can aspire to. Unfortunately they've tried so hard to "catch him" that he has become rather suspicious, and shyer than ever.

I still think Aia and Matilda or even Githa would be great choices for him.

Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 07/26/2009 - 08:54.The house is built into the side of a hill, so the top floor is bigger than the bottom. On the ground floor it has the kitchen, which we've seen several times, and some sort of pantry / cellar behind, which is in the side of the hill. On the top floor there's the girl's little room, which we saw, as well as the boy's room, and a bigger room for the parents. Right now it's just Os living there and he's sleeping in the big room now. It's a nice house, but it's smaller than Ethelwyn's, say, or even Ethelmund's.

Eight Mile House is so named
Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 08/02/2009 - 13:23.Eight Mile House is so named because it is located eight miles east of Kingsmarket. It is nothing but a round stone hut that is centuries older than 1085. It might have been used by shepherds or farmers in the past. Right now nobody lives out there, but the house is well-known as a landmark, and also a place to stop and get out of the rain, or spend the night or whatever if you're on your way to or from Raegiming or Thorhold. It really is small... as Egelric said, he can't even stand up straight in it. It's just barely big enough for travelers to build a small fire in the middle and have three or four men sleep around it.

Submitted by Devin on Sun, 08/09/2009 - 05:49.Yes it was, Aia is 2 days knocked up! My only hope is Egelric taking her in. Who would want a knocked up Elf woman.

Submitted by Devin on Sun, 08/09/2009 - 05:57.Ok I was in shock. Maybe this might turn out to be beneficial for Aia. She could finally have her baby and Egelric might take pity on her. This pregnancy could be a good thing.

I'm going to take a wild
Submitted by PenelopetheFox on Sun, 08/09/2009 - 11:31.I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark here and guess that it's Llen's baby. And that they both knew that she was likely to get pregnant at the time. And that Egelric is in Ramsaa and wouldn't do anything if he could?
EDIT: OH WAIT! I see the concern. We're still looking for a man for Aia! Like Ralf or Aed or someone. Aia might be on her own here. :\
It's Llen's baby. He came
Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 08/09/2009 - 11:40.It's Llen's baby. He came back. The first time he went, he actually knew it was a little early -- the point was to get to Aia before it was too late. Afterwards he came back to finish the job. It's anybody's guess how that little tryst went. At some point we will see more Llen / Aia but not just yet.
If it's any consolation, I'm sure Aia's thrilled. Independent of any good or bad feelings she may or may not have surrounding Llen, she just wanted a baby more than anything. And she probably realizes it's for the best that it's his, if only because he threatened to kill it if it were half-human. But she may realize that Llen will prove possessive, which could protect her in the long run.
As for Egelric, he's in Ramsaa and he'll have a hell of a time getting out of that fort and back to Lothere even if he wants to. (Which I doubt he does. He might head for the hills, but they wouldn't be the hills of Lothere.)
And yeah... even if he were there I doubt he would do anything for or to Aia. That chapter of his life is closed. In "Alred makes a monument of a man" he told Alred "I want no more to do with elves forever." And Egelric doesn't "clap his big hands and flick them at the air in a gesture so arcane and so portentous that Alred's scalp prickles" unless he means it.
Let me know if you have any more bubbles left to burst, Devin. My pin is at the ready.
I'm actually really excited
Submitted by Van on Sun, 08/09/2009 - 18:15.I'm actually really excited about this baby. I've been thinking about Llen and Aia lately, and I've come to the conclusion that while I do like both characters, they don't really have as much individual appeal to me as I thought they did... but the two of them together have huge appeal. Can't wait to see more of this!
Oh definitely. I don't
Submitted by Lothere on Sun, 08/09/2009 - 19:38.Oh definitely. I don't think Llen brings much out in Aia that we wouldn't have seen anyway, but Aia exposes a whole hidden side of Llen. I'm not sure any other elf alive has seen what she has, now and eight years ago.
And regardless of how their relationship works out, its existence plays a role in my whole master plan for the elves (including Larl in the front lines). So I too am looking forward to this. *rubs hands together*
I think this whole affair
Submitted by Devin on Mon, 08/10/2009 - 04:33.I think this whole affair will end disastrously. How could Llen protect her if he's living underground? Can she take care of 2 babies by herself, she's only now getting a handle on taking care of Wendle properly. And you say she's going to meet Wulf and Gils, I don't see it ever happening. I wonder how Sela would have handled all of this...
And yet this will cause so much drama

I never said it wouldn't end
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 08/10/2009 - 04:40.I never said it wouldn't end badly. Just that it would be interesting.
Don't underestimate Wulf and Gils. When Iylaine was six she went all the way to Raegiming all by herself.
